Campgrounds and RV parks near Sidney, IL

Water recreation drives most trips to the area. Kickapoo State Recreation Area covers 2,842 acres with 22 deep-water ponds and access to the Middle Fork of the Vermilion River, Illinois' only National Scenic River. Only electric motors are allowed on the park's lakes, and Kickapoo Adventures rents canoes, kayaks, tubes, and paddleboards on Clear Pond. Hikers and cyclists can use the park's trail system, including a 7.6-mile out-and-back running and hiking trail, while equestrians have nearly 35 miles of shared equestrian and hiking trails at Middle Fork State Fish and Wildlife Area. Walnut Point Lake is the focal point of Walnut Point State Park; except for electric trolling motors, boat motors are not allowed, and swimming is not permitted. Champaign-Urbana adds college sports, restaurants, and grocery runs, and the Amish communities near Arcola and Arthur are a common day trip.

Peak camping runs from late spring through mid-fall. Reservations for the main campground at Kickapoo are available from May 1 to October 31 through ExploreMoreIL, and any camping outside that window is on a first-come, first-served basis. Shower buildings and the sanitary dump station at Kickapoo are winterized and closed from December 15 to March 31, depending on weather, though one shower building is kept open for year-round campers. Walnut Point follows a similar pattern, with peak season running from mid-April through the end of October and the campground closing during winter. A concession stand at Walnut Point operates from April through October, selling food, ice cream, bait, firewood, and boat rentals. Spring brings redbud and wildflower bloom along the tree-lined drives, and fall foliage in the oak, hickory, and maple woods peaks in mid to late October. Summer weekends fill quickly at both state parks and at private RV parks near Champaign, so book several weeks ahead for holiday stays.

State park campgrounds in this area are electric-only, not full hookup. At Kickapoo, electrical hookups are on sites 1-101 with a mix of 30 and 50 amp service; there are no water hookups at sites, but potable water is available from centralized spigots and at the dump station. Walnut Point has 34 electric sites in a 30 and 50 amp mix, accommodates RVs up to 40 feet, and has one dump station near the campground entrance. Sites at Kickapoo tend to be wooded and level, with lakeside options along Long Lake in the Fox and Redear loops. Walnut Point runs a family-owned concession that also sells firewood and rents kayaks. Equestrian sites at Middle Fork and the Redear loop at Kickapoo are basic, with vault toilets and no hookups, so plan for self-contained RV use.
