Campgrounds near South Jacksonville, Illinois
South Jacksonville sits just south of Jacksonville in west-central Illinois, about 30 miles west of Springfield and within a short drive of the Illinois River corridor. The area draws RV travelers using it as a base for Abraham Lincoln historic sites, farm-country touring, and quiet lake fishing. Terrain is gently rolling prairie and cropland cut by wooded creek bottoms, which shapes the character of the campgrounds nearby.
Options range from full-hookup private parks to a rustic state park. Buena Vista Farms Campground, a few miles northwest near Chapin, offers full-hookup RV sites with generous spacing and tiny-home cabin rentals on a working farm property. Crazy Horse Campground and Double J Campground and RV Park round out the private-park choices in the surrounding counties, catering to weekend RVers and longer stays.
For a public-land experience, Beaver Dam State Park lies south of the city in Macoupin County. It is a nearby Illinois Department of Natural Resources campground and pairs electric sites with a stocked lake.
Things to do near South Jacksonville
Fishing is a core draw. Beaver Dam State Park is centered around the 59-acre lake stocked with channel catfish, bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass, and redear sunfish, and the park has a boat ramp plus an accessible fishing pier. Buena Vista Farms offers two fishing lakes, canoes, kayaks and paddle boat, playground, hiking trails, and open green space for guests.
Hiking and wildlife viewing pair well with a base at Beaver Dam. Located in Macoupin County 7 miles southwest of Carlinville and situated in an oak/hickory woodland, Beaver Dam State Park offers a variety of recreational opportunities on its 750 acres. Fishing, picnicking, hiking, and tent and trailer camping are among the most popular activities. Beaver Dam is open and ready for ice skaters or cross country skiers in winter.
Day trips are practical. Springfield's Lincoln sites sit roughly 30 miles east, and the Illinois River towns to the west add museums, wineries, and river overlooks within an hour's drive.

Peak camping season runs from late spring through mid-fall, matching the region's growing season and the operating window for lake concessions and outdoor programs. Weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day fill first at the reservable sites, and holiday windows should be booked well in advance.
Spring brings wildflowers and active fishing but also the wettest stretch of the year, so low-lying tent areas can turn muddy. Summer is warm and humid with regular afternoon thunderstorms. Fall delivers the most comfortable conditions, with oak and hickory color usually peaking in mid to late October.
Winter camping is limited. Private parks such as Buena Vista Farms keep a portion of sites open year-round for RVs, while state park amenities scale back. A few RV spots are kept open all winter at Buena Vista Farms, which is useful for shoulder-season travelers and work campers, though winterized hookups and self-contained rigs are expected.
How to book
For Beaver Dam State Park, reserve through the state's official system. The Rent-A-Cabin and many campsites are available for reservation using the ExploreMoreIL website, and there are 40 reservable campsites; all others are first-come, first-served. Book several weeks ahead for summer weekends and holidays; walk-in sites tend to be claimed early on Fridays.
Private parks handle reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Buena Vista Farms Campground, Crazy Horse Campground, and Double J Campground and RV Park all accept advance bookings for RV sites and cabins, with seasonal and monthly rates available at some properties.
Reservations are recommended for weekend stays, particularly at established campgrounds like Crazy Horse and Buena Vista Farms. Bring backup options if arriving without a reservation during peak weekends.
What to expect on-site
Expect a mix of hookup levels. The Beaver Dam State Park Campground offers 66 RV campsites, 40 of which are reservable. Though the RV sites do not include water or sewer hookups, electric hookups of 15/20/30/50 amps are available. The trailer camping area has electricity at each pad and a sanitary dump station. A shower building with flush toilets is located in the center of the trailer camping area. Water is available, but individual sites do not have water hookups.
Private parks lean full-service. Buena Vista Farms offers Full Hook up RV sites (60 feet wide) that are up to 90 feet long for Big Rigs, with 20/30/50 amp electric, sewer, and city water at every pad.
Cell coverage is reliable near I-72 and US-67 but weakens in wooded lake areas. Buy firewood locally where allowed, and plan for pets on leash at all locations.
