Campgrounds near South Pekin
South Pekin sits in Tazewell County in central Illinois, a short drive south of Peoria and within easy reach of the Illinois River valley and the sand-prairie country west of the river. RV travelers use it as a base for a mix of state-forest camping, private RV resorts, and lake-oriented parks.
The closest sizeable public land is Sand Ridge State Forest, southwest of Peoria across the Illinois River, the largest state forest in Illinois, covering roughly 7,100 acres of oak-hickory woodland and pine plantations. Pine Camp - Sand Ridge State Forest is the main drive-in option, with 27 rustic Class C sites featuring fire pads, picnic tables, water spigots, and vault toilets, but no water, electric, or sewer hookups. Oak Camp - Sand Ridge State Forest is set up primarily for organized group camping.
For full-hookup travel, Sankoty Lakes near Spring Bay and Evening Star Camping Resort to the west offer resort-style stays, while Kentuckiana Campground provides another private option in the corridor. Together these five properties cover the range from primitive state-forest camping to full-service RV resorts.
Things to do around South Pekin
Sand Ridge State Forest anchors most outdoor plans. The forest offers panoramic vistas and miles of hiking, backpacking, and horseback-riding trails, a hand-trap shooting facility, an archery range, and snowmobiling in winter. Sandy terrain and prickly pear cactus growing among the pines are unusual sights for Illinois, and the forest is popular with birdwatchers thanks to neo-tropical migrants that pass through.
On the water, Sankoty Lakes runs guided fly-fishing on a dedicated trout stream and rents kayaks and paddleboards on its lakes. Kayaking, canoeing, swimming, bird watching, and boating are common on-site activities. Peoria, roughly 20 minutes north, adds the Peoria Zoo, the Peoria Riverfront, and the Caterpillar Visitors Center for family day trips when the weather turns.

Central Illinois runs on a four-season humid-continental cycle. Summers are warm, winters are cold and bring regular snowfall, and precipitation is spread relatively evenly through the year, though spring tends to be wetter and winter is the driest season. Late spring often brings the highest rainfall totals and occasional severe thunderstorms.
Prime RV season runs May through October, and holiday weekends fill fast. Summer heat and humidity peak in July and August, and ticks are a real concern in warm months at Sand Ridge State Forest, so long pants and repellent are worth packing.
Shoulder seasons work well for open-sky sites like Sankoty Lakes, where lack of shade is more comfortable in cooler months. Winter narrows the options: many private resorts close or run limited services, though Sand Ridge keeps 26 miles of designated snowmobile trails open when there is at least 4 inches of snow, with the trailhead at Oak Camp - Sand Ridge State Forest.

Greg was great! The RV was delivered in a timely fashion and Greg walked me through its various functions and amenities. I was able to travel with my family (5 of us in all) from Central Illinois to Estes Park, Colorado. We were able to step out of our RV every morning to the sight of mountains surrounding us, and the RV handled very well on the mountain roads! Thanks, Greg! My family and I were able to make some terrific memories!

Greg and his wife were excellent to work with and we had the best time traveling in their RV! Really a great experience for first-timers!
