Campgrounds near Sycamore, Illinois
Sycamore sits in DeKalb County, about an hour and a half west of downtown Chicago in the prairie-and-farmland belt of northern Illinois. The area works well as an RV base: interstates I-90, I-88, and I-39 bracket the region, and campgrounds within a 30-mile radius range from lakeside private resorts to state park loops with electric hookups.
Sycamore RV Resort is the closest option, a family-owned lakeside park operating since 1986 with fishing on two spring-fed lakes totaling roughly 30 acres, a swimming beach, and full-service RV amenities. Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort in nearby Marengo spans about 65 acres with more than 295 campsites and all-paved roads, arranged around an 8-acre lake, with full hookups, pull-throughs, and a sandy swim beach that accommodates rigs up to 75 feet.
Farther out, Chicago Northwest KOA Holiday in Union adds cabins and other lodging to standard RV sites, while Pine Country RV and Camping Resort near Belvidere and NorthWoods RV Resort round out the private-park choices. State-park camping at Shabbona Lake and Rock Cut is within an easy drive for renters who want a more rustic setting.
Things to do near Sycamore
Water recreation drives most trips. Sycamore RV Resort has paddle boats, tennis, and sand volleyball on-site, and Lehman's Lakeside adds complimentary paddle boats, canoes, and kayaks on its lake. Shabbona Lake State Recreation Area, about 20 miles southwest, is a well-known fishing lake, and its campground has 150 Class A Premium sites with electricity, showers, and vehicular access.
Rock Cut State Park near Loves Park centers on Pierce Lake, with multiple camping loops and electric hookups. The Illinois Railway Museum in Union, within a short drive of the KOA, is a strong pick for families interested in trains and streetcars.
Within an hour of Sycamore, RV renters can reach Anderson Japanese Gardens in Rockford, Cantigny Park in Wheaton, and the restored prairies at Fermilab in Batavia. Downtown Sycamore itself has walkable streets, a historic courthouse, and the annual Pumpkin Festival held in late October.

Northern Illinois has four sharply defined seasons. Summers are warm, humid, and the busiest for camping, with July averaging a high near 28°C, roughly 80°F, and the longest daylight hours of the year. June tops the wettest-month list with roughly 127 mm of rainfall, so pop-up thunderstorms are a regular feature of afternoon plans. Peak private-park bookings run Memorial Day through Labor Day, with holiday weekends filling well in advance.
Spring and fall are the sweet spots for RV renters who prefer quieter loops. May brings mild temperatures and blooming trees, and September and early October deliver crisp air, changing foliage, and lower humidity. Late October coincides with the Sycamore Pumpkin Festival downtown.
Winter is cold and snowy: January averages a high near 27°F and a low around 15°F. Most Illinois state park campsites can be reserved from May 1 through October 31, though some parks accept reservations year-round. Private resorts vary: Sycamore RV Resort operates April 1 through October 31, while Lehman's Lakeside is open all year with full hookups, so confirm dates before booking.

Very very helpful to have a sizable fridge and freezer. Microwave a big plus. Solar panels and Shore Power allowed us to use comfy air-connditioning. Thanks.

We had an amazing experience renting a camper from Catherine! From start to finish, she made the process so easy. The camper was spotless, fully stocked with everything we needed (and then some!), and it made our trip comfortable and stress-free. Catherine was incredibly responsive and always quick to answer any questions we had. It was obvious she put a lot of thought into making sure her guests had a great experience. If you’re looking to rent a camper, we highly recommend Catherine. We wouldn’t hesitate to rent from her again. Thank you for helping make our weekend such a wonderful trip!

How to book campgrounds near Sycamore
Illinois state park sites, including Shabbona Lake and Rock Cut, are booked through the ExploreMoreIL online reservation system run by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Reservations require a $5 non-refundable reservation fee and payment of the full camping and utility fees at the time the reservation is made, and must be made on the website at least three days before the campsite is needed. A campsite can be reserved for a maximum of 14 nights within a 30-day period, and bookings can be made up to 180 days in advance.
Private resorts book directly through their own websites or by phone. Sycamore RV Resort, Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort, Chicago Northwest KOA Holiday, Pine Country RV and Camping Resort, and NorthWoods RV Resort each handle their own reservations, and popular summer weekends can fill several weeks out. Most state park campgrounds also hold a portion of sites for first-come, first-served campers, useful for last-minute trips.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain is gently rolling prairie and farmland at roughly 800 to 900 feet of elevation. Private RV resorts in the area typically offer full hookups with 30/50 amp service, dump stations, laundry, showers, Wi-Fi of variable quality, and family amenities like playgrounds, swim beaches, and stocked lakes. State park loops lean more basic: electric hookups on many sites, with a sanitary dump station, drinking water, and a shower building on the grounds, but generally no sewer at the pad.
Mosquitoes and biting flies are active from late spring through summer, especially near lakes, so bring repellent. Summer thunderstorms can be intense; check the forecast before towing. Cell coverage is generally strong across the area given proximity to Chicago and Rockford.
Grocery, propane, and RV supply runs are easy: DeKalb, Sycamore, and Marengo all have full-service stores within a short drive of most campgrounds, and I-90 corridor stops handle overnight resupply for travelers passing through.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Sycamore, IL
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Sycamore, IL?
RV rental in Sycamore, IL is affordable compared to big-city options like Chicago. On RVezy, towable trailers in the Sycamore area typically average around $125 per night, while motorhomes run about $200 to $250 per night, and many hosts offer weekly and monthly discounts. You will usually save the most by booking midweek (Sunday through Thursday) and avoiding the Sycamore Pumpkin Festival weekend in late October when downtown draws large crowds. Filter listings by Instant Book and travel range to compare cheap RV rental Sycamore options side by side, and message hosts directly about multi-night discounts. Many first-timers are surprised they can book a fully equipped travel trailer for less than a hotel room in nearby Naperville.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sycamore%2C%20IllinoisDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Sycamore, IL?
Good news: for the vast majority of RV rentals in Sycamore, your regular Class D driver's license is all you need. Illinois ties license class to vehicle weight, and most travel trailers, Class B campervans, and Class C motorhomes on RVezy fall well under the weight thresholds that would require a higher classification. You also need to be at least 25 years old to be an approved RVezy driver, and RVezy verifies your ID through the booking platform, so there is no extra paperwork on pickup day. If you are eyeing a larger Class A motorhome, check the GVWR on the listing or message the host. Out-of-state visitors can use their home-state license while driving through Illinois.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat's included for protection and peace of mind on my Sycamore RV rental?
Every RV rental in Sycamore, IL booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right in, so you are covered from the moment you drive off. During checkout, you choose the protection tier that fits your trip, and that plan helps cover damages to the vehicle so a small mishap does not turn into a big bill. Roadside help is one phone call away whether you get a flat on I-88 or need a jump start at Shabbona Lake. It is not traditional auto insurance, but it gives renters real financial peace of mind. Most first-timers say this is the single biggest reason they felt confident booking.

You can book your Sycamore RV trip with confidence. RVezy applies a standard cancellation policy across the platform, including a money-back grace period right after you book so you are not locked in the second you confirm. The exact refund depends on how far ahead of your trip you cancel. If life happens, contact RVezy support and they will walk you through your options, and if a host cancels on you, RVezy issues a refund or travel credit. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best DeKalb County rigs, knowing you have flexibility if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Sycamore RV rental?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Sycamore options are easy to find on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page and you will see every host in DeKalb County who welcomes furry co-pilots. Sycamore is a great pet town: the Kishwaukee-Kiwanis Riverwalk Park along the Kishwaukee River has shady trails perfect for morning walks, and the Sycamore Park District Sports Complex has open green space. For camping, most sites at Shabbona Lake State Recreation Area welcome leashed dogs (just not inside the rental cabins). Message your host about pet fees up front so there are no surprises, and pack a tie-out stake for campsite use.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.shabbonalake.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Sycamore?
Yes, RV delivery in Sycamore is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is a game-changer for first-timers. Many local hosts will drive the RV to your campsite at Shabbona Lake State Recreation Area or a private property in DeKalb County, then level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means you skip the stress of towing a trailer through downtown Sycamore on State Street or backing into a tight site. Delivery fees are typically based on mileage from the host's location. Filter listings by Delivery to see who offers it, then message the host with your exact campground address for a quote.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sycamore%2C%20IllinoisHow far can I drive on my Sycamore RV rental, and what are the mileage policies?
You have plenty of road ahead of you. Each RVezy host sets their own mileage policy, and listings clearly show whether your daily allowance is 100 miles, 200 miles, or unlimited. For a typical Sycamore RV trip, 100 miles a day easily covers Shabbona Lake (about 15 miles south), Starved Rock State Park (about 60 miles south), or Rockford (about 40 miles west). If you are planning a bigger loop to Galena (about 95 miles west) or Lake Geneva, Wisconsin (about 70 miles northeast), look for an RV rental with unlimited mileage to skip overage fees, or negotiate a higher cap with the host before booking. Pro tip: sort by mileage policy on the search results page to find the best fit for your itinerary.

Paul Wolff Forest Preserve Campground near Elgin (about 35 miles east) is operated by the Kane County Forest Preserve. Chicago Northwest KOA Holiday in Union (about 25 miles northeast) adds cabin and glamping options. Pro tip: book Shabbona Lake's reservable sites at least 60 to 90 days ahead for summer weekends, since the muskie-famous lake fills up fast.
camp.exploremoreil.com/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Sycamore?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Sycamore is late May through early October, when daytime highs run from the upper 60s to low 80s and overnight lows stay comfortable for sleeping. July is the warmest month with average highs around 84 degrees F, while May and June tend to bring the most rain, so pack accordingly. Early fall (mid-September to mid-October) is a local favorite for cooler nights, fewer bugs, and the Sycamore Pumpkin Festival, held the last full weekend of October, which draws thousands to downtown. Winter rentals are possible for hardy travelers, but many local campgrounds close by late October. Shoulder-season trips in May or September often score lower nightly rates on RVezy too.
weather.gov/lot/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be able to handle it?
First time renting an RV? You are going to do great, and Sycamore is one of the easier places in northern Illinois to learn. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering propane, water, slide-outs, and dump procedures, and you can message them anytime during your trip with questions. The roads around Sycamore are mostly flat, wide rural routes (think Route 64, Peace Road, and DeKalb Avenue) with lighter traffic than the Chicago suburbs. For your first night, pick a pull-through site close to town so you can drive into Sycamore for a restaurant if anything feels overwhelming. Pro tip: choose a Class C or travel trailer under 25 feet for your first trip to keep handling simple.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You are never alone on a Sycamore RV trip. Every booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the RVezy protection plan, covering things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing if needed. One call connects you to dispatch who will send help wherever you are, whether that is the shoulder of I-88 near DeKalb or a back road on the way to Starved Rock. Your host is also a direct message away through the RVezy app for questions about appliances or quirks of their specific rig, and RVezy support is available before, during, and after every trip. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate at pickup so you have it handy if you ever need to call for help.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips from Sycamore, IL?
An RV road trip from Sycamore puts some of the Midwest's best destinations within easy reach. Starved Rock State Park is about 60 miles south for waterfall hikes and sandstone canyons along the Illinois River. Galena, the historic riverboat town in Illinois's northwest corner, sits about 95 miles west with rolling Driftless-region scenery. Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, is about 70 miles northeast for lakefront camping and shoreline mansions. Chicago is about 60 miles east if you want urban day trips (park the RV in the suburbs and take Metra in). For a longer haul, the Wisconsin Dells are about 175 miles north. Most RVezy hosts allow interstate travel, just confirm cross-border details when you message them. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.starvedrock.htmlHow much should I budget for fuel on a Sycamore RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost, but it is predictable once you know your rig. Class C motorhomes around Sycamore typically get 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans get 14 to 18 MPG, and trucks pulling travel trailers land around 10 to 12 MPG. Illinois gas prices generally run a bit higher than neighboring Indiana or Wisconsin due to state fuel taxes, so a smart move is to fill up just over the border if your route crosses state lines. For a typical weekend trip to Shabbona Lake and back (about 30 miles round trip), you will spend under $25 on fuel for most rigs. For a 500-mile Galena loop, budget closer to $150 to $200. Pro tip: use a fuel app like GasBuddy to find the cheapest pumps along I-88 before you roll out.
gasprices.aaa.com/state-gas-price-averages/How far in advance should I book a campground near Sycamore?
Booking 2 to 3 months ahead is the sweet spot for summer weekends, especially at popular spots. Shabbona Lake State Recreation Area uses the ExploreMoreIL reservation system and books up fastest for Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day weekends. For private parks like Chicago Northwest KOA Holiday in Union, 30 to 60 days out is usually enough. If you are eyeing the Sycamore Pumpkin Festival weekend in late October, lock in your campground and RVezy rig even earlier. Pro tip: if you strike out on a Friday or Saturday booking, try Sunday or Monday arrivals, since sites often open up after weekend campers leave.
camp.exploremoreil.com/What are the driving conditions like around Sycamore?
Driving an RV around Sycamore is refreshingly straightforward. The town sits on flat farmland in DeKalb County with wide rural highways like Route 64, Route 23, and Peace Road, plus easy access to Interstate 88 just a few miles south in DeKalb. Watch for two seasonal hazards: summer thunderstorms can bring sudden crosswinds (pull over if it gets rough), and winter weather from late November through March can bring snow, ice, and reduced visibility, especially on rural roads. Avoid downtown State Street during Pumpkin Festival weekend in late October when streets close for the event. Pro tip: gas up in DeKalb, where larger stations have RV-friendly pull-through pumps, rather than smaller in-town stops.
idot.illinois.gov/travel-information/winter-conditions.htmlWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Sycamore?
Most campgrounds near Sycamore offer solid amenities for a comfortable stay. Shabbona Lake State Recreation Area offers electric hookups at all 150 Class A premium sites, a sanitary dump station, drinking water spigots, and flush restrooms with showers, though sewer hookups are not at individual sites. Chicago Northwest KOA Holiday in Union offers full hookups, pull-through sites, a pool, and Wi-Fi. Most state park sites are 30-amp electric, so check your RV's electrical needs. Pro tip: bring a 30-to-50-amp adapter just in case your RVezy rental needs it, and ask your host whether a surge protector is included.
dnr.illinois.gov/parks/park.shabbonalake.htmlWhat features and amenities come with a typical RV rental in Sycamore?
Most motorhome rental Sycamore listings on RVezy come fully equipped so you can show up and just go. Expect a queen or full bed, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink and basic cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, dinette seating that converts to a bed, air conditioning, furnace, and seatbelts for everyone traveling. Many hosts also include a TV, Bluetooth speakers, outdoor camp chairs, and a generator for off-grid sites. Wi-Fi varies, with some hosts offering mobile hotspots as add-ons. Each listing has a full amenities checklist so you know exactly what is included. Pro tip: message your host to ask about linens and kitchen kits, since many include them free, saving you a packing headache.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sycamore%2C%20IllinoisWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Sycamore RV rental?
RVezy hosts in Sycamore offer plenty of useful add-ons to customize your trip. Common options include delivery and setup (especially handy if you are nervous about towing), generator use, propane refills, bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, camp chairs, bike racks, outdoor grills, and pet cleaning fees. Pickup and drop-off windows are set by each host, often with a standard afternoon pickup and late-morning return, though many will accommodate flexible timing if you ask. Mileage policies range from 100 miles per day to unlimited, so factor that into your route to Shabbona Lake or Starved Rock. Pro tip: bundle add-ons during booking rather than asking at pickup, since hosts pre-stage everything based on your reservation.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sycamore%2C%20IllinoisHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment for your rent an RV in Sycamore booking is handled entirely through the secure RVezy platform, so you never hand cash or write a check to your host. You pay the trip total at booking, which covers the rental, protection plan, and any add-ons you selected. A separate security deposit is pre-authorized (held, not charged) on your card before pickup, then released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid any deposit issues, do a quick walkthrough video at pickup and return, dump tanks and refuel as required, and return the RV on time. Pro tip: review the listing's return checklist the night before drop-off so nothing surprises you.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre there winter RV rental options in Sycamore?
Yes, winter RV camping in Sycamore is doable and can be a memorable adventure if you are prepared. Some RVezy hosts keep their rigs available year-round, especially four-season units with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and upgraded insulation. January is the coldest month with average highs around 30 degrees F and lows in the mid-teens, so look for listings that specifically mention winter-ready features and shore power capability. Most local campgrounds close November through March, but Shabbona Lake State Recreation Area remains open for day use year-round. Pro tip: book a delivered RV parked on a private property with a 30-amp outlet for the warmest, easiest winter experience, and pack extra propane.
