Campgrounds near Thomasboro, Illinois
Thomasboro sits in Champaign County in east-central Illinois, just north of Champaign-Urbana and within easy reach of Interstate 57 and Interstate 74. The village is flat prairie farmland, so most RV camping options cluster around the Champaign-Urbana metro to the south and the Vermilion County park system near Danville to the east.
For full-hookup RV stays, D and W Lake Camping and RV Park in Champaign is the closest developed option, with pull-through sites, laundry, and a small fishing lake. Tin Cup RV Park offers a smaller, quieter alternative in the same corridor, and South Park Municipal Campground provides a straightforward town-run stopover.
About 30 to 40 minutes east, the state park system opens up. Champaign-Urbana is roughly 30 to 40 minutes east of Kickapoo State Recreation Area, where Redear Campground sits, and Middle Fork State Fish and Wildlife Area Equestrian caters specifically to riders with horse trailers. Together these give RV renters a mix of easy roadside stays near the interstate and more rustic state-park camping within a short drive.
Things to do near Thomasboro
Kickapoo State Recreation Area has 22 lakes and access to the Middle Fork River, and is known for the opportunities it provides for water-based outdoor activities. Anglers find largemouth and smallmouth bass, channel catfish, bluegill, crappie, and redear sunfish, plus annual fall and spring stockings of rainbow trout that give central Illinois anglers a chance to fish for catchable-size trout. Kayak and canoe rentals are available from Kickapoo Adventures on Clear Lake.
Middle Fork State Fish and Wildlife Area covers 2,700 acres of grass, forest, and cropland, providing excellent wildlife habitat along a portion of the Middle Fork, Illinois' only National Scenic River. The area offers nearly 35 miles of equestrian and hiking trails and sits within four miles of Kickapoo.
Closer to Thomasboro, families use the Champaign-Urbana area for University of Illinois sporting events, golf, biking paths, and dining. Kids gravitate toward the on-site fishing pond and playground at D and W Lake Camping and RV Park between park days.

Peak RV season runs May through October, when state park facilities are fully open and reservations are active. Reservations for the main campground at Kickapoo are available from May 1st to Oct 31st at ExploreMoreIL, and any camping outside of this timeframe is on a first-come, first-served basis. Centralized water spigots, two shower buildings, and the sanitary dump station are winterized and closed from December 15th to March 31st depending on weather.
Late fall brings a hard shift, and the exposed lakeside loops at Kickapoo lose services first, so RV renters targeting Redear Campground - Kickapoo State Recreation Area should plan trips before that transition. One shower building stays open for year-round access, and walk-in sites remain available throughout the year.
Winter and early spring are workable for shorter stays at private parks like D and W Lake Camping and RV Park. Summer weekends near the University of Illinois can fill quickly around football, graduation, and race events, so booking several weeks ahead is wise from June through October.

How to book campgrounds near Thomasboro
State-park sites go through the Illinois DNR's ExploreMoreIL reservation platform. Kickapoo features two major campgrounds for tent or trailer camping, with online reservations available at ExploreMoreIL. Reservations can be made up to 180 days in advance via ExploreMoreIL. All campers must obtain a camping permit from the campground host or through reservations before entering the campgrounds.
The maximum length of stay is 14 days in a 30-day period, all guests must check in with the campground host before entering, and campers must have equipment with them the day they register and occupy the site that day.
Private parks handle bookings directly. D and W Lake Camping and RV Park, Tin Cup RV Park, and South Park Municipal Campground each take reservations by phone or through their own websites.
