Campgrounds and RV parks near Vermont, IL

Water and trails are the main draw. Argyle Lake State Park's 93-acre lake supports boating and fishing, and 5 miles of rugged foot trails wind through heavily wooded terrain across a 1,700-acre site. The lake is stocked with bluegill, redear, channel catfish, largemouth bass, crappie, saugeye, tiger muskie, and rainbow trout, and boat rentals are available at the concession stand. At Weinberg-King State Park Fish and Wildlife Area, Williams Creek meanders through 772 acres of rolling hills, and horse riders will find 30 miles of bridle trails plus a dedicated equestrian campground. Williams Creek holds bluegill, bullhead, channel catfish, and smallmouth bass for bank fishing. Family-oriented private parks add pools, planned events, and stocked ponds. Crazy Horse Campground offers onsite fishing, kayaking, mini-golf, a swimming pond with an inflatable obstacle course, playground, gem mining, and a full-service café.

Late spring through early fall is the core RV season in west-central Illinois. Spring and fall bring mild weather and vibrant foliage, while summer draws the biggest crowds at both public and private parks. Weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day tend to book out first, and the Argyle Antique Gas Engine Show over Labor Day weekend packs Argyle Lake State Park. Private resorts run a defined season. Crazy Horse Campground operates roughly April 1 through October 31 on level, packed gravel sites that accommodate RVs up to 60 feet, so shoulder-season travelers should confirm dates directly with the operator before arrival. Evening Star Camping Resort likewise runs a spring-through-fall season. Winter changes the mix. Argyle Lake State Park stays open year-round and is suited for ice skating, ice fishing, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and sledding, though services scale back and hookups may be limited. Ticks are present in the area from spring through fall, so campers should wear long sleeves, use insect repellent, and check for ticks regularly.

Sites in the region are a mix of wooded, gravel, and open grass. At the private resorts, expect level packed gravel pads with 20-, 30-, or 50-amp service, pull-throughs and back-ins, and a range of full-hookup, water/electric, and primitive options. Crazy Horse Campground handles large RVs including 40-foot Class A motorhomes and provides a clean bathhouse, a camp store, and a lodge open until 8 PM. At the state parks, expect quieter, more rustic conditions. A disposal station and restrooms with showers are available at Argyle Lake State Park. Cell coverage is uneven in the rural stretches west of Peoria, so download maps in advance. Grocery runs, fuel, and propane are easiest from Macomb, Rushville, or Havana. Wildlife viewing is common: more than 200 bird species have been recorded at Argyle Lake, so binoculars are worth packing.
