Campgrounds and RV parks near Wadsworth, IL

Lake Michigan is the main draw. Illinois Beach State Park has swimming beaches, dune and swale hiking trails, and birding across marsh, forest, and dune habitats. A paved bike trail links the park's north and south units for cyclists. Inland, the Chain O'Lakes region is Illinois' largest concentration of natural lakes, with the Fox River connecting Grass, Marie, Nippersink, and other lakes. Expect boating, fishing for muskie, walleye, largemouth bass, bluegill, and catfish, plus paddle rentals in season. Families can add the Kenosha lakefront and Wisconsin dining a short drive north, Six Flags Great America to the south in Gurnee, and Lake County forest preserves for shorter hikes and picnic outings.

The Illinois Beach State Park campground operates seasonally, open from April 1 through November 15, so winter RV camping is not available at the state park itself. Private and lakeside options in the Chain O'Lakes area typically run on a similar spring-to-fall schedule, with some private parks closing earlier in November. Summer is peak season. July and August draw the highest demand at the state park, with weekend sites filling well in advance and first-come, first-served sites often taken by early Friday. Book several weeks out for holiday weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. Spring shoulder weeks bring cooler winds off Lake Michigan and fewer crowds, good for birding and quiet trail time. Fall delivers oak and hickory color across the Chain O'Lakes region and cooler nights, with hunting seasons opening at some state lands in late fall. Freezing temperatures and campground closures make December through March a non-camping window for most RV travelers in this corridor.

The Illinois Beach State Park campground offers Class A Premium sites with electric hookups, shower and restroom buildings, and a dump station. Individual water and sewer hookups are not provided at sites, but water is available in the campground. Sites include a mix of shaded and open loops, and the walk to the beach from most areas is short. At Chain O'Lakes State Park, expect Class A Premium electric sites across two main campgrounds, a 14-night maximum stay in any 30-day period, and access to boat launches, hiking, and horse trails. Bring bug spray and tick protection in warm months, secure food from raccoons overnight, and plan for lake breezes that can turn evenings cool even in summer. Pets must be leashed at Illinois state parks.
