Campgrounds and RV parks near Wapella, IL

Wapella sits in DeWitt County in central Illinois, a short drive from two of the region's largest camping destinations. Clinton Lake State Recreation Area sits just east of Clinton, and Weldon Springs State Park is a 550-acre park located just southeast of Clinton in DeWitt County. Both sit within roughly 15 minutes of Wapella and anchor most RV trip planning in the area. Clinton Lake is the largest option by far. Campgrounds feature 17 Class AA campsites, 277 Class A campsites, and 14 Class B/S campsites, most of which are adaptable to trailers or motor homes. The traditional Class A campground at Weldon Springs has 75 sites with electricity, vehicular access, a sanitary dumping station, shower building, cooking grills, picnic tables, pit toilets and playground equipment. Farther afield, Timberline Ridge - Moraine View State Recreation Area sits to the northeast near Le Roy, while Arrowhead Acres and Camp A While provide private-campground alternatives for RV renters who want simpler check-in or full-hookup sites.

Both nearby state parks use the same statewide reservation platform. Camping and group camp reservations for Weldon Springs and Clinton Lake are accepted through the ExploreMoreIL website. Reservations can be placed up to 180 days ahead of arrival and must be made at least three days before the campsite is needed. Sites not reserved are available first-come, first-served. For RV renters, filter by Class AA or Class A when booking, since these loops carry electric service suitable for motorhomes and travel trailers. Class AA sites at Clinton Lake carry electric, water and sewer hookups and are limited, so they go fast. Private options such as Arrowhead Acres and Camp A While take direct bookings through their operators and are worth checking when state-park sites are sold out on summer weekends.
