Campgrounds and RV parks near Warrensburg, IL

Water recreation drives most trips. Clinton Lake State Recreation Area is built around a 4,900-acre cooling lake used for boating, sailing, swimming at the 1,000-foot Mascoutin sand beach, and fishing for crappie, bass, catfish, and walleye. Weldon Springs State Recreational Area offers a smaller 29-acre spring-fed lake with a single boat launch, electric-motor-only restrictions, and bait, tackle, and rental fishing and paddle boats at the concession. Hiking is straightforward and family-friendly. Weldon Springs has a two-mile Lakeside interpretive loop that circles the lake and the 3.1-mile Old Farm Trail from the campground to the north end of the park. Clinton Lake adds shoreline trails and equestrian routes. Hickory Point - Sangchris Lake State Park adds a public archery range, roughly twenty miles of equestrian trails also open to hikers, and lakeside sites that suit fishing and kayaking. Springfield's Lincoln sites are within day-trip range.

Peak camping season runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, which is also when the Mascoutin sand beach at Clinton Lake is open. Weldon Springs and Clinton Lake campgrounds are open year-round, but shower buildings and potable water are seasonal. At Weldon Springs the shower building closes in the fall and reopens in the spring. At Clinton Lake, showers and potable water are available from mid-April through November, weather permitting. At Sangchris Lake, water facilities including the shower building close from the Monday before Thanksgiving through March 31. Spring can bring high water. Primitive backpack sites along Salt Creek at Weldon Springs may flood, and calling the park office before arrival is advised. Summer weekends fill quickly, and holiday weekends carry a fee surcharge for Class AA and Class A sites at Clinton Lake. Fall is quieter and cooler, with color through October. Winter access continues for ice fishing and cross-country skiing at Weldon Springs and Sangchris, though hookups and services are limited. Deer Run at Sangchris closes the second week of January through March 31, and the Mascoutin area at Clinton Lake closes the full week before the first firearm deer season.

Sites in this area are generally spacious and shaded, with gravel or grass pads. Expect 30-amp and some 50-amp electric at state park Class A and AA sites, potable water hydrants throughout the loops, and central dump stations rather than sewer at each pad. Full hookups are rare and concentrated in a small number of Class AA sites at Clinton Lake. Cell coverage is generally usable on major carriers across central Illinois, though it varies loop to loop. Mosquitoes are common near lakes in summer, and food should be stored securely against raccoons and other wildlife in tent areas. Roads and park entries are flat and easy to navigate for larger rigs, but published site lengths can be optimistic. Confirming site dimensions before booking a longer travel trailer or Class A is worthwhile.
