Campgrounds and RV parks near Waverly, IL

Fishing and paddling are the main draws at the nearest state park. Beaver Dam State Park is centered around a 59-acre lake stocked with channel catfish, bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass, and redear sunfish. Hikers can follow trails through oak-hickory forest, including the Beaver Dam Loop around the lake, and an archery range and wildlife-watching areas round out the park's activity mix. Families looking for on-site activity gravitate to the private campgrounds. Crazy Horse Campground offers fishing, kayaking, mini-golf, a swimming pond with an inflatable water obstacle course, playground, and gem mining, with planned activities for all ages and a full-service cafe onsite. Double J features an in-ground swimming pool, mini golf, a pedal-kart track, basketball, volleyball, and a playground. Springfield is a short drive north and delivers the Lincoln presidential sites, museums, and restaurants that anchor most trips to the region.

Central Illinois has a humid continental climate with sharp seasonal swings. Summers are warm and winters are cold with regular snowfall, and precipitation is spread relatively evenly through the year, though summers tend to be wetter and winters drier. Late spring through early fall is the practical RV window for most travelers. Summer weekends and holidays fill quickly at the more popular parks, and reservable state-park sites often go weeks in advance. Shoulder seasons in April, May, September, and October bring cooler nights, fewer bugs, and easier availability, but campers should pack for temperature swings and passing thunderstorms. Winter access is limited. Double J stays open year-round for camping with full hook-up RV sites, while state-park camping loops and lake concessions scale back. Renters planning a cold-weather trip should confirm which loops, water spigots, and dump stations remain in service before arrival, and check whether the state-park lake concession is operating.

Hookup levels vary noticeably between the state park and the private campgrounds. Beaver Dam State Park offers 66 RV campsites, 40 of which are reservable, and while the RV sites do not include water or sewer hookups, electric hookups of 15/20/30/50 amps are available. The trailer camping area has a sanitary dump station, and a shower building with flush toilets sits in the center of the area; water is available at central spigots rather than at individual sites. Private parks lean full-service. Every site at Double J is a pull-through with modern hookups, including a fire ring, picnic table, 30/50 amp electric, water, sewer, and cable TV on most sites. Crazy Horse offers full-hookup RV sites along with tent sites and cabin rentals. Sites at the state park are wooded and shaded with gravel access; expect mosquitoes near the lake in summer and limited cell coverage in the more rural spots.
