Northern Illinois has four sharp seasons, and campground calendars reflect that. Fox Bluff seasonal sites run April 11 through October 11, with transient stays available through mid-October. Sycamore RV Resort is open April 1 through October 31. Lehman's Lakeside RV Resort operates a longer season for full-hookup guests, and Chicago Northwest KOA Holiday and Fish Lake Beach follow the standard warm-season calendar. Summer is peak season, with warm days, active pools and beaches, and full weekend event calendars. Sites at family resorts near Chicago fill fastest for Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day weekends, so early booking is essential. Shoulder months (April, May, September, October) bring cooler nights, fewer crowds, and easier reservations, though pools and lake amenities may be closed by mid-October. Winter drops well below freezing with snow, ice, and short daylight; most private resorts either close or shift to seasonal storage only. Most Illinois state park campsites may be reserved from May 1 through October 31, with some parks accepting reservations year-round.

Expect suburban-adjacent camping rather than remote wilderness. Sites tend to be gravel or paved pads with full hookups, and most private resorts around Wayne cater to families with pools, playgrounds, and beach access. Sites cluster closely together in an open layout at the Chicago Northwest KOA Holiday, creating a neighborhood-like atmosphere. Sycamore RV Resort has water, electric, and sewer hookups on shaded and open sites, with clean restrooms and hot showers, laundry, fire rings, and a campground store. Big rigs are generally welcome at the larger resorts, but confirm length limits when booking. Cell service is reliable throughout the region, and Wi-Fi is offered at most parks with variable quality. Expect mosquitoes near the lakes and rivers in summer, thunderstorms that can be intense but brief, and heavy weekend traffic on I-90 and I-88 heading out of Chicago on Friday evenings. Pack for temperature swings, particularly in spring and fall.
