Campgrounds near West Chicago, Illinois
West Chicago sits in DuPage County about 30 miles west of downtown Chicago, close to O'Hare International Airport and the Fox River corridor. RV renters typically use the city as a base for exploring both the metro Chicago attractions to the east and the state parks, rivers, and farmland to the west and south.
Full-hookup RV options within roughly an hour's drive include Fox Bluff RV Resort along the Fox River in Yorkville, Leisure Lake Membership Resort and Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort near Joliet, Martin Campground, and Chicagoland Speedway/Lakeside Campgrounds. These privately operated resorts generally offer 30-amp or 50-amp electric with water and sewer at many sites, and most stay open across a longer season than the state park campgrounds.
Illinois state parks in the region, including Illinois Beach, Chain O'Lakes, and Kankakee River, provide additional public tent and RV sites but tend to have shorter operating seasons and stricter rig-length limits. Renters should confirm rig-size, slide-out, and hookup requirements with each property before booking.
Things to do near West Chicago
The DuPage County forest preserves surround West Chicago with paved trails, prairie restorations, and fishing lakes. West Chicago Prairie Forest Preserve and the Illinois Prairie Path both run through the area and work well for cycling and dog walking directly from a campsite.
Families staying at Fox Bluff RV Resort are minutes from Raging Waves Waterpark and Fox River paddling. Guests at Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort and Chicagoland Speedway/Lakeside Campgrounds have quick access to Joliet-area attractions, including race weekends at the speedway.
Downtown Chicago is reachable by Metra commuter rail from West Chicago and Geneva, which lets RV travelers park the rig and day-trip to Millennium Park, Navy Pier, the museums, and Wrigleyville without driving into the city.

34° / 21°F 53 mmCold and snowy; most private resorts reduce services
Peak RV season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Weekends at Fox Bluff RV Resort, Leisure Lake Membership Resort, and Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort fill quickly during summer, and holiday weekends often sell out weeks in advance. Illinois state park campgrounds also see their heaviest demand in July and August.
Late spring and early fall are quieter and often more comfortable for touring. May brings wildflowers to the DuPage forest preserves, and September and early October deliver warm days, cool nights, and fall color along the Fox River. Bug pressure drops noticeably after Labor Day.
Winter travel is limited. Many private resorts reduce services or close from late October through March, and most Illinois state park campgrounds operate on a shortened cold-weather schedule with limited water hookups once temperatures drop below freezing. Confirm winter availability directly with each campground before locking in a reservation.

How to book campgrounds near West Chicago
Private resorts in the area, including Fox Bluff RV Resort, Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort, Martin Campground, and Chicagoland Speedway/Lakeside Campgrounds, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Many require a two-night minimum on weekends and a three-night minimum for holidays.
Leisure Lake Membership Resort is a membership-based property, so verify guest and rental-RV access rules before booking. Illinois state park campsites are reserved through the state's ExploreMoreIL portal up to six months (180 days) in advance, and popular weekends open at 7:00 a.m. Central Time on the release date.
For summer holiday weekends, book as early as reservation windows allow. Weekday and shoulder-season stays usually have more flexibility and often permit shorter minimum stays.
What to expect at West Chicago campgrounds
Most private RV resorts in the West Chicago area offer full or partial hookups with 30-amp and 50-amp service, gravel or paved pads, and pull-through options for larger rigs. Amenities commonly include pools, laundry, showers, dump stations, and Wi-Fi, though coverage strength varies by site.
Terrain is generally flat to gently rolling, with mature tree cover along the Fox River properties and more open, sunny layouts at the speedway and casino resorts. Mosquitoes and gnats are active from late May through August, so bring repellent and consider screen rooms.
Cell service on major carriers is strong throughout the metro area. Grocery stores, hardware stores, propane refills, and RV service centers are all within easy driving distance of every campground on the list.

Travel trailers typically run $75 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A motorhomes start around $250 per night. You can save the most by booking midweek (Sunday through Thursday), avoiding July 4 and Labor Day holiday spikes, and filtering for hosts who offer weekly discounts. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=West%20Chicago%2C%20IllinoisDo I need a special license to rent an RV in West Chicago?
Good news: for the vast majority of RV rentals in West Chicago, your standard Class D driver's license is all you need. Illinois ties license class to vehicle weight, and almost every camper van, travel trailer, and Class C motorhome on RVezy comes in under the 16,000-pound Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) threshold that triggers a higher license class. RVezy approved drivers must generally be 25 or older, and ID is verified inside the platform during booking. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). If you are eyeing a large Class A diesel pusher, message the host to confirm the GVWR before you book.

The insider pick is mid-September through mid-October, when DuPage County's oak and hickory woodlands flame into color, mosquitoes vanish, campgrounds quiet down, and daytime temperatures hover in the comfortable 60s and 70s. weather.gov/lot/I have never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You will do great, and West Chicago is an ideal spot for a first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a complete walkthrough at pickup, showing you how the propane, water, electric, slide-outs, and waste systems work before you drive away. Many West Chicago hosts have years of experience renting to first-timers and can recommend beginner-friendly campgrounds like Blackwell Forest Preserve, which has wide pull-through sites just 10 minutes away. Choose a travel trailer with delivery if driving a motorhome feels intimidating, or pick a compact Class C in the 24- to 28-foot range. Message your host with questions before booking, and remember that 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every reservation. You have a safety net the whole way.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I break down during my West Chicago RV trip?
You are covered. Every booking on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat tire on the Ronald Reagan Memorial Tollway, run out of fuel near Starved Rock, or have a dead battery at your Blackwell Forest Preserve campsite, help is one phone call away. The service handles tire changes, jump starts, fuel delivery, lockouts, and towing to a qualified repair location. Your host is also a great first call for quirks specific to their RV, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my West Chicago RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, crossing state lines from West Chicago is allowed by most hosts and even encouraged because the location is perfectly placed for a multi-state Midwest loop. Popular RV road trip from West Chicago routes include north to the Wisconsin Dells and Door County (about 4 to 5 hours), east to Indiana Dunes National Park (about 90 minutes), south to Shawnee National Forest (about 5 to 6 hours), and west to the Mississippi River and Iowa's Effigy Mounds (about 3.5 hours). Travel into Canada may be possible but requires advance approval from the host because of insurance coverage rules, so message them before booking. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Confirm your route with your host and you are free to roam.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a West Chicago RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost on any RV trip, so it pays to plan. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (mpg), Class A motorhomes 6 to 10 mpg, campervans 16 to 20 mpg, and trucks pulling travel trailers 10 to 14 mpg. Illinois gas prices typically run slightly higher than the national average because of state fuel taxes, so consider filling up just over the Wisconsin or Indiana border when possible. A weekend trip from West Chicago to Starved Rock State Park (about 150 miles round trip) in a Class C will run roughly $50 to $75 in fuel. Pro tip: use a fuel price app to spot cheaper diesel at truck stops along I-80 and I-39.
afdc.energy.gov/fuels/prices.htmlHow far in advance should I book a campground near West Chicago?
For the best sites, book early. Blackwell Family Campground in Warrenville accepts reservations in advance through dupageforest.org, and Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day weekends sell out fast, often within hours of opening. Illinois state parks like Starved Rock and Chain O' Lakes use the Reserve America system at exploremoreil.com and also book months out. Private parks like Fox Bluff RV Resort and Chicago Northwest KOA take reservations far in advance and fill up for summer weekends by April. Insider tip: weekday stays (Sunday through Thursday) are often available even when weekends are booked solid, and you will typically save 20 to 30 percent on nightly rates.
exploremoreil.com/What are West Chicago driving conditions like in an RV?
West Chicago is one of the easier Chicagoland suburbs to navigate in a motorhome rental West Chicago because it sits just west of the I-355 and I-88 interchange, with wide roads and quick access to rural routes heading west and south. Avoid driving any RV into downtown Chicago: Lower Wacker Drive, Lake Shore Drive, and many parkways have height restrictions around 12 feet 6 inches and tight turns. Stick to I-88, I-90, and I-355, where lanes are generous and gas stops are RV-friendly. Watch for sudden summer thunderstorms (June through August) and winter snow squalls (November through March) that can drop visibility fast on flat prairie stretches. Check Illinois DOT's GettingAroundIllinois.com for real-time road conditions before you roll.
gettingaroundillinois.com/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near West Chicago?
Campgrounds near West Chicago range from rustic forest preserves to full-resort experiences, so you can match amenities to your trip style. Blackwell Family Campground offers electric hookups at every site, a dump station, a water-fill station, and a shower house with flush toilets (no sewer or water at individual sites). Fox Bluff RV Resort in Yorkville and Leisure Lake Resort in Sandwich offer full hookups (electric, water, and sewer) plus pools, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Chicago Northwest KOA Holiday adds activities like mini golf and a swimming pool. For dump and fill stops on the road, many Love's Travel Stops along I-80 and I-88 offer RV dump stations for a small fee. Always confirm hookup type when reserving.
dupageforest.org/things-to-do/recreational-activities/camping/family-campingWhat is inside a typical RV rental in West Chicago?
Modern campervan rental West Chicago and motorhome options come fully equipped so you can move in and explore. Expect a queen or king bed, full kitchen with refrigerator, freezer, propane stove, microwave, and sink, plus a wet or dry bathroom with shower and toilet. Class C and Class A motorhomes typically sleep 4 to 8 with a dinette and over-cab bunks, while travel trailers often include slide-outs for extra living space. Most have rooftop air conditioning (essential for July humidity in Illinois), a propane furnace for shoulder-season trips, fresh and gray water tanks, and seatbelts for travel passengers. Many hosts include a generator, outdoor camp chairs, and a starter kit with linens, pots, and dishes. Check the Amenities section of each listing for specifics like Wi-Fi, TV, or solar.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=West%20Chicago%2C%20IllinoisWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in West Chicago offer plenty of add-ons to customize your trip. Common ones include camping chairs and tables, bedding and linen packages, generators, kayaks or bikes, and pet packages. Pickup is typically at the host's home or storage location, with many West Chicago hosts based within 20 minutes of the city. Many also offer delivery to Blackwell Forest Preserve, Paul Wolff Campground, or your driveway for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary by host (100 to 150 miles per day is common, with extra miles often at $0.30 to $0.50 each), so check the listing or message the host before booking to lock in the right package for your trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=West%20Chicago%2C%20IllinoisHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure through RVezy. You pay your rental cost, taxes, RVezy service fee, and any host add-ons by credit card directly through the platform when you book, so there is no awkward cash handoff at pickup. A refundable security deposit is held on your card before the trip starts (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the rig) to cover potential damage or extra cleaning, and it is separate from the booking payment. Assuming you return the RV in the same condition you received it, the hold is released after the trip. To keep things smooth: take time-stamped photos at pickup and dropoff, return with the same fuel and propane levels, dump tanks if required, and follow the host's cleaning checklist.
