Campgrounds and RV parks near Westmont, IL

Westmont works well as a base for exploring both metro Chicago and the Fox and DuPage river corridors. Families can spend a day at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, ride the Illinois Prairie Path, or head into the city for the Museum Campus, Navy Pier, and Lincoln Park Zoo. Outdoor activities cluster in the Cook County Forest Preserves just east and south of Westmont, with hiking, mountain biking, fishing, birdwatching, and paddling on preserve lakes and rivers. The Palos and Salt Creek trail systems are open to bikes, and DuPage County's own forest preserves add miles of crushed-limestone trails close to town. RV travelers staying at Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort or Chicagoland Speedway/Lakeside Campgrounds can pair campground stays with race weekends, casino entertainment, or riverwalk visits in Aurora and Joliet.

The Chicago area has four distinct seasons, and campground availability follows them closely. Chicago's climate is typically continental with cold winters, warm summers, and frequent short fluctuations in temperature, humidity, cloudiness, and wind direction, which shapes what kind of RV trip is realistic in each part of the year. Late spring through early fall is the practical window for most travelers. Peak season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when private parks fill quickly on weekends and holiday stays often require multi-night minimums. Most campsites may be reserved from May 1 through October 31 in the Illinois state park system, so trips outside that window depend on private parks or the handful of year-round public sites. Shoulder months, April and October, bring cooler nights and fewer crowds, and are a good fit for travelers with heated rigs. Winter camping is limited, though a small number of Cook County Forest Preserve sites offer heated cabins that remain open through the colder months.

Private RV parks in the Westmont area typically offer full hookups, paved or gravel pads, Wi-Fi, laundry, and pet areas. Sites at destination resorts like Hollywood Casino Hotel and RV Resort and Chicagoland Speedway/Lakeside Campgrounds are geared to larger rigs and often include shuttle access to on-site attractions. Public sites are more rustic. In the Cook County Forest Preserves, all three RV campgrounds offer either electric and water or just electric at the site, most sites are 30/50 amp with a few 20 amp, sites can accommodate rigs up to 38 feet, and no dump stations are available at Camp Sullivan or Camp Reinberg, though Camp Bullfrog Lake has a dump station about 20 minutes from Camp Sullivan. Expect traditional bathhouses, quiet hours, and campfire rules that vary by park. Mosquitoes are common near wetlands from June through August, so bring repellent.
