Campgrounds near Winnetka
Winnetka sits on Chicago's North Shore along Lake Michigan, roughly a 20-mile drive north of downtown. The village itself is residential and has no RV parks within its limits, so RV travelers base themselves at campgrounds in Lake and McHenry counties to the north and west, most within an hour's drive.
The closest options span private resorts and Illinois state parks. Pingala RV Resort and Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort offer full-hookup private-park camping, while Grass Lake Marina and RV Park caters to boaters on the Chain O' Lakes waterway. For state-run sites with electric hookups and lakefront access, Illinois Beach State Park on Lake Michigan and Turner Lake South at Chain O' Lakes State Park are the two main choices.
Most campers plan around water. The Lake Michigan shoreline and the interconnected Chain O' Lakes system drive the region's recreation, and campgrounds cluster near both. Access to Chicago attractions is straightforward: Metra commuter trains run from nearby stations, so families can leave the RV parked and take the train downtown for a day.
Things to do near Winnetka
Lake Michigan is the anchor. Illinois Beach State Park stretches along the lakeshore with swimming beaches, hiking trails, and a bike path connecting its north and south units. The 4,160-acre park features swimming, boating, hiking, fishing, and picnicking, along with a South Unit campground.
Inland, Chain O' Lakes State Park is built around water recreation. Anglers target bluegill, largemouth bass, walleye, crappie, muskie, northern pike, bullhead, catfish, and yellow and white bass, and seasonal boat and canoe rentals are available through a concessionaire on site. Four trail systems accommodate hikers, cyclists, and horseback riders.
For families, Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort adds resort-style amenities: a sandy swim beach, heated pool, hot tub, playgrounds, pickleball, basketball courts, and a full events calendar. Downtown Chicago museums, the lakefront, and Wrigley Field are all reachable by car or Metra.

Camping in the Winnetka area is a warm-season activity. Most private resorts and state campgrounds operate roughly from spring through fall and close in winter. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort's overnight season runs from May 1 through October 15, and the Illinois Beach State Park campground is open from April 1 through November 15. Chain O' Lakes State Park is closed for all activities except hunting from the beginning of November through mid-December.
Summer is peak. July and August book fastest, and holiday weekends fill months ahead. Due to the high use of this area on summer weekends, reservations are recommended, and unreserved campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Weekend walk-ups often arrive Wednesday or Thursday to secure sites at Chain O' Lakes.
Shoulder seasons trade crowds for cooler nights. Spring brings mild days and chilly winds off Lake Michigan; fall delivers foliage and quieter weekends before campgrounds shut for the season.
How to book
Illinois state parks use a single reservation platform, ExploreMoreIL, which can also be reached by calling 866-716-6550. Chain O' Lakes State Park, including Turner Lake South, accepts reservations up to 180 days in advance. Illinois Beach State Park only accepts reservations for stays between May 1 and September 30, though the campground itself is open from April 1 through November 15; outside the reservation window, sites are first-come, first-served.
Private campgrounds book directly. Fish Lake Beach Camping Resort, Pingala RV Resort, and Grass Lake Marina and RV Park each take reservations through their own websites or by phone, and popular summer weekends often require multi-night minimums.
Book early for Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day weekends. For state park sites, the maximum stay is 14 nights in a 30-day period.
What to expect
Hookup expectations vary between private and state sites. Fish Lake Beach offers full hookups with 30- and 50-amp service, water, sewer, and a dump station, plus a pool, hot tub, laundry, and store. State park sites are more basic: at Illinois Beach, the 241 Class A Premium sites have electricity and access to showers and sanitary facilities, with a dump station in the campground but no individual water or sewer hookups.
Expect mosquitoes and biting flies near the marshes and lakes in summer. Bug spray is essential. All campers at Chain O' Lakes must have a permit and bring their own firewood, gathering wood from the park is prohibited, and alcohol is not permitted in the campgrounds.
Cell coverage is generally solid across the region. Grocery stores, gas, and RV supplies are easy to reach in Antioch, Fox Lake, Zion, and Gurnee.
