Campgrounds and RV parks near Boswell, IN

Water recreation drives most trips across the state line. Kickapoo State Recreation Area features 22 deep-water ponds totaling 221 acres, with electric-motor boating, canoeing, kayaking, and tubing available, plus scuba diving in the clearest ponds. Anglers target bass, catfish, crappie, bluegill, and seasonally stocked rainbow trout. On land, the park has a 22-mile trail network for hiking and mountain biking. Equestrians head to Middle Fork State Fish and Wildlife Area Equestrian, which offers 35 miles of marked equestrian trails that double as cross-country ski and snowmobile routes in winter. For families, Charlarose Lake and Campground offers a playground, basketball court, weekly bingo, and fishing on the on-site lake. Off-road riders base at Off the Trail Vacation Rentals & Campground, which sits directly next to the Badlands Off-Road Park in Attica.

The camping window in this part of Indiana and eastern Illinois runs mainly from spring through fall. Charlarose Lake and Campground is a seasonal park in Hillsboro, typically operating from about April through November, so it is not a year-round option. Late spring through early summer brings the wettest stretch of the year, and river levels on the Middle Fork can rise quickly after storms. At Redear Campground and the rest of Kickapoo State Recreation Area, seasonal infrastructure changes matter for RV planning. Two shower buildings and a sanitary dump station serve campers, and these facilities are winterized and closed from December 15 to March 31 depending on weather. Shower buildings close by November 1 and reopen May 1, with weather-driven variations. Sites remain available year-round, but shoulder-season campers should expect limited amenities. Winter camping is possible but bare-bones. Ice fishing, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing are popular winter pastimes at Kickapoo, and Middle Fork's equestrian trails double as ski and snowmobile trails when snow allows.

Sites and amenities vary widely across this cluster. At Kickapoo State Recreation Area, 184 sites serve tent, trailer, and group camping. Electrical hookups exist on sites 1-101, with both 30 and 50 amp service on selected sites, centralized water spigots throughout the campground, two shower buildings, and a sanitary dump station. There are no individual water hookups, but potable water is available at the dump station. Redear Campground itself is basic, with outhouses, more shade, and a few lakeside spots. Middle Fork State Fish and Wildlife Area Equestrian is more primitive, with stock water and outhouses but no electricity and no showers. Private parks offer more comfort: Off the Trail Vacation Rentals & Campground includes rental homes, cabins, and hookup sites, while Charlarose Lake and Campground provides 50 amp electric, water, and sewer, and allows only RVs and campers, with tents permitted only when attached to a camper.
