Campgrounds and RV parks near Brook, IN

Fishing, hunting, and boating dominate outdoor recreation in Newton County. Lake Kenoyer, on the edge of Brook, is a popular local fishing spot, and the Iroquois River adds paddling and shore fishing options a few minutes south. The historic George Ade estate, known as Hazelden, sits along the Iroquois River just east of Brook and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Willow Slough Fish & Wildlife Area, near Morocco, covers roughly 10,000 acres of marshes, ponds, and oak barrens surrounding J.C. Murphey Lake, with a 20-mile paved loop trail open to bicycles and more than a thousand acres of water available for fishing. During early spring, thousands of migrating waterfowl and flocks of American white pelicans can be seen on the property. Chicago attractions are within a day-trip range for RV families willing to make the drive north.

The Brook area follows a humid continental pattern with four sharply defined seasons. Winters are cold, with January averaging a high near freezing and lows well below it. Most private RV resorts in Newton County either close or offer limited services from late fall through early spring, so winter trips are usually short and self-contained. Spring is transitional and often wet, and lower campsites and grass overflow areas can be soft after heavy rain. Wildflowers, migrating waterfowl and pelicans through the Kankakee marshes, and the reopening of DNR water spigots at Willow Slough (approximately April through October) make late spring a strong shoulder season. Summer is the peak RV season, warm and often humid, with July averaging highs around 81°F and heat indices frequently climbing higher. Fall brings milder, generally drier weather, fall color along the Iroquois River, and active hunting seasons on DNR ground; campground demand tapers after Labor Day and drops sharply once water is shut off for the season at state properties.

Expect a rural, low-traffic setting. Brook itself has a population under a thousand, so travelers should plan on stocking groceries, propane, and RV supplies before arriving, or making short trips to Kentland, Rensselaer, or the I-65 corridor for larger stores. Private parks in the area generally provide water, electric, and sewer or dump-station service, and several are built around small lakes with beaches, pools, or fishing. Cell coverage is usually workable but can be spotty on back county roads, and level, hard-packed sites are common given the flat terrain. Public DNR camping at Willow Slough is genuinely primitive: no hookups, water at spigots approximately April through October, and flush toilets on site. Swimming is prohibited at Willow Slough, and hunting is active on DNR ground during fall and winter seasons.
