Campgrounds and RV parks near Buffalo, IN

The biggest draw is Lake Shafer and the Indiana Beach Boardwalk Resort in Monticello. Indiana Beach is an amusement park located on Lake Shafer that first opened in 1926, with an operating season running May through October. It packs roller coasters, a water park area, and midway games into a compact lakeside footprint. On the water, Lake Shafer and neighboring Lake Freeman support boating, tubing, and fishing for bass, crappie, and bluegill. Paddlers gravitate to the Tippecanoe River, one of the state's finest paddling and smallmouth bass fisheries, with local liveries near Winamac renting boats for float trips. At Tippecanoe River State Park, a 23-mile trail system includes 9 miles of hiking-only paths winding through bottomland forest and wetlands, with additional shared hiking and horse trails. The property borders seven miles of the Tippecanoe River, and a fire tower offers wide views of the surrounding country.

The camping season around Buffalo follows a classic north-central Indiana pattern. Private lakeside parks near Indiana Beach fill quickly once school lets out, with peak demand running from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Indiana Beach itself operates May through October, so families targeting the amusement park should plan trips inside that window. At Tippecanoe River State Park, the property is open year-round, though the main campground season runs from mid-May through mid-November. Equestrian primitive camping typically runs mid-April into October. Spring brings higher water on the Tippecanoe and strong paddling conditions, while fall delivers cooler nights, thinner crowds, and color along the river bottoms. Fishing is permitted year-round in the region. Winter is quiet. Most private campgrounds close or shift to limited service, roads can be icy, and daytime highs often stay near or below freezing. Shoulder seasons in April, May, September, and October are the sweet spot for RV travelers who want mild weather and easier reservations.

Expect a lake-and-river landscape more than dramatic terrain. The country around Buffalo is flat to gently rolling, with corn and soybean fields broken by woodlots and the Tippecanoe corridor. Cell coverage is generally solid near Monticello and thinner in the state-park backcountry. Private parks near Lake Shafer lean toward a busy, family-resort feel, with pools, camp stores, and shuttle service to Indiana Beach. Expect noise from the amusement park during operating hours if camping close to the boardwalk. Tippecanoe River State Park offers electric sites in a wooded setting, two modern comfort stations with flush toilets and hot showers, and a dump station near the park entrance. Rent-a-camp cabins are also available on a seasonal basis. The vibe there is quieter, forested, and more traditional state-park camping.
