Campgrounds and RV parks near Chalmers, IN

The main draw for families is Indiana Beach Amusement Park on Lake Shafer, with rides, a boardwalk, and a water park. Lost Acres RV Park sits close to boating, fishing, and the amusement park, making it a practical base for a multi-day visit. Lake Shafer and Lake Freeman support boating, water skiing, tubing, and fishing for bass, crappie, and catfish. Public ramps and marina rentals are available around Monticello. Prophetstown State Park adds hiking, cycling on paved trails, an aquatic center with a lazy river and tube slide, and a living-history 1920s farm and Woodland Indian village. Off the water, Purdue University in West Lafayette and the Tippecanoe Battlefield are both within a short drive.

The camping season in this part of Indiana is concentrated between mid-spring and mid-fall. Lost Acres RV Park and most nearby private parks operate seasonally, typically from April into October, with limited or no winter operation. Prophetstown State Park campground stays open year-round, with peak season running from April through October, though some water systems and full-hookup services can be closed off during severe winter weather. Summer is peak season. Weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day fill quickly at lake-adjacent parks, especially around Indiana Beach events, holiday weekends, and Purdue football weekends in the fall. Booking six to eight weeks ahead is typical for summer Fridays and Saturdays; holiday weekends often sell out earlier. Spring and early fall bring lower demand, cooler nights, and easier availability. Fall color in central Indiana generally peaks in mid to late October. Winter camping is limited, with bathhouses and water often winterized outside of peak season.

Expect flat to gently rolling terrain, mixed hardwood shade at lakeside private parks, and more open, prairie-style sites at Prophetstown. Roads into the campgrounds are paved and easy for larger rigs, though interior loops at older private parks can be tight. Prophetstown's Spruce Loop pads are level and can accommodate long rigs. Mosquitoes and gnats are active from late spring through August, particularly near the lakes and river bottoms. Cell coverage is generally strong on major carriers throughout White and Tippecanoe counties. Families should plan for busy pools, playgrounds, and heavy traffic to Indiana Beach on summer weekends. Quiet hours are enforced at most parks, and pet rules vary, so check leash and breed policies before arrival.
