Eaton sits in northern Delaware County along the Mississinewa River, about 15 minutes north of Muncie and 15 minutes south of Hartford City. The town is small and serves as a quiet base for RV travelers exploring east-central Indiana's farmland, small towns, and reservoirs. Interstate 69 runs a short drive to the west, making Marion, Anderson, and Fort Wayne easy day trips.
Campground options within a 30-minute radius lean private and family-focused. Wildwood Outdoor Escape near Hartford City offers RV sites with full hookups, plus a pool, mini-golf, basketball, volleyball, playgrounds, and a rec center. Marbrook Campground and Sports Lake Campground sit closer to Marion and Gas City with full-hookup sites and on-site water features. The Delaware County Indiana Fairgrounds provides event-adjacent RV parking closer to Muncie, and the International Aeromodeling Center hosts a members' campground tied to model-aviation events.
Public camping is more limited in the immediate area. Prairie Creek Reservoir covers roughly 1,275 acres of water and 750 land acres on Muncie's south side, offering the closest municipal option with waterfront primitive sites and cabins.
Things to do near Eaton
Water and fishing dominate the local recreation mix. Wildwood Outdoor Escape features a swimming pool and sun deck plus fishing at Willow Lake and Bole's Fishing Hole, along with mini-golf and a rec center. The Eaton-area camping season is short and clearly bounded. Most private parks operate from spring through mid-fall. Wildwood Outdoor Escape runs from mid-April through mid-October and accommodates tent campers to RVs up to 75 feet with full hookups including electric, water, and sewer. Sports Lake Campground and Marbrook Campground follow similar spring-to-fall schedules, and the AMA campground at the International Aeromodeling Center closes for the winter.
Prairie Creek Reservoir's campground season runs from April 1 to October 31, with stays limited to 7 days in any 30 day period. Winter camping options in the immediate area are effectively absent, and shoulder-season visitors should confirm hookup availability before booking, since water lines are typically shut off after the first hard freeze.
Summer weekends and holiday windows fill first, especially at properties near I-69 and around large AMA events at the aeromodeling center. Spring brings unpredictable weather and higher rainfall; fall trades warm days for cool nights and dependable foliage color through October.
How to book
Reservation systems vary by property. Wildwood Outdoor Escape and the International Aeromodeling Center both accept online bookings through Campspot. Sports Lake Campground and Marbrook Campground take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites; payment at Wildwood has historically been cash or check only, so confirm accepted payment methods when booking any of the smaller parks.
Prairie Creek Reservoir reservations must be made with the park office, payment is taken at the time of reservation, a 2-night minimum is required for all weekends, and some holidays require more. The Muncie Parks office keeps weekday hours only, so weekend arrivals should call ahead earlier in the week.
For event weekends at the Delaware County Indiana Fairgrounds or the aeromodeling center, book several weeks out. AMA camping generally requires online registration and current AMA membership for most sites.
What to expect on-site
Sites in the Eaton area are generally level, grassy or gravel, and pull-through options are common. Wildwood Outdoor Escape accommodates RVs up to 75 feet with full hookups including electric, water, and sewer, and offers camping with full hook-up, water and electric as well as primitive sites in 20, 30, or 50 amperage connections. Prairie Creek's primitive campsites are on the South Shore without modern amenities, with vault restrooms in close proximity.
Expect a strong seasonal-camper presence. Many sites have long-term occupants, but short-stay visitors are equally welcome. Golf-cart traffic, quiet-hour rules, and defined pool and playground policies are typical.
WiFi can be unreliable, and cell service details are limited in available reviews, so it may be worth planning accordingly. Pack drinking water, insect repellent for creekside sites, and a plan for laundry.
