Camping near Lafayette, Indiana
Lafayette sits in west-central Indiana at the crossroads of I-65 and the Wabash River, with West Lafayette and Purdue University on the opposite bank. RV travelers use the city as a base for state parks, the Wabash Heritage Trail, and Sugar Creek country to the south. The closest developed public campground is Prophetstown State Park, located where the Tippecanoe River meets the Wabash near the town of Battle Ground, northeast of Lafayette.
Public camping in the area is concentrated at Prophetstown, which has a 110 site modern campground with a mix of full-hookup and electric-only sites, all ADA accessible. Private options include Big Fish-n-Camp Ground and Old Mill Run Park closer to Lafayette, while Crawfordsville KOA Journey and Sugar Creek Campground and Canoe Rentals sit roughly 25 to 30 miles south along the US 231 and I-74 corridor.
Most sites in the region accommodate travel trailers, fifth wheels, and Class A through C motorhomes. Cellular coverage is generally good near I-65 but can be weaker inside Prophetstown's prairie interior.
Things to do around Lafayette
Prophetstown State Park anchors the outdoor options. The park's Aquatic Center features a 30-foot tube slide, body flume, lazy river float area, adventure channel, and a zero-entry pool, which makes it a strong pick for families with kids during summer. The park also has paved bike paths, prairie trails, and the Farm at Prophetstown living-history site next door.
South of the city, Sugar Creek Campground and Canoe Rentals puts paddlers on the water directly, with canoe, kayak, and tubing rentals on site. Turkey Run and Shades state parks are within short driving distance for day hikes.
In town, Purdue University, the Columbian Park Zoo, and the Tippecanoe Battlefield Museum are the main non-outdoor stops.

The RV season in the Lafayette area runs roughly April through October. Full amenities at Prophetstown State Park, including water, modern restrooms, and full hookups, are available May through October each year. Shoulder-season campers should call the property office to check on utility availability, since water and full-hookup service are typically winterized from November through April.
Summer weekends and holidays fill fastest. Prophetstown's full-hookup Spruce Loop typically books out first, and the campground is well known for filling on weekends. Private parks along Sugar Creek see a similar pattern tied to water levels for paddling.
Winter camping is possible at Prophetstown at a reduced rate, but expect limited services and closed bathhouses. The park itself stays open year-round for day use, with cross-country skiing and sledding available when snow cover allows. Sugar Creek Campground and Canoe Rentals and Crawfordsville KOA Journey operate seasonally, with the KOA on limited facilities from mid-November through mid-April.

How to book campgrounds near Lafayette
Prophetstown State Park is booked through the Indiana DNR reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made at least two days ahead of arrival and can be made up to six months in advance, and popular summer weekends often sell out as soon as the window opens. When booking, specify rig type and length, since the park separates full-hookup and electric-only loops.
Crawfordsville KOA Journey is booked through the KOA reservation system or by phone, and its pull-through sites accommodate rigs up to 80 feet in total length. Sugar Creek Campground and Canoe Rentals, Big Fish-n-Camp Ground, and Old Mill Run Park take bookings directly through their own websites or by phone.
For last-minute summer trips, third-party cancellation-alert tools can help snag released Prophetstown sites.
What to expect on the ground
Prophetstown is a prairie park, not a wooded one, so RVers should plan for open sun and bring awnings or shade shelters. The campground has two main loops: one with full hookups and one with electric-only 50-amp sites, both on paved pads with picnic tables and fire rings. Roads and pads are hard-surface, and site dimensions on the full-hookup loop generally accommodate rigs up to about 55 feet.
Crawfordsville KOA Journey offers a shadier, tree-lined setting with a pool, playground, and pet-walking service. Some reviewers note that interior roads and landscaping can be tight for very large rigs, so drivers of 40-foot-plus coaches should ask about site selection at check-in.
Expect an Indiana state park entrance fee at Prophetstown in addition to camping charges, and note that alcohol is prohibited on Indiana DNR property.

homeofpurdue.com/hotels/camping-and-rv/What kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Lafayette, Indiana?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need for almost every RV rental in Lafayette, Indiana. The state of Indiana only requires a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for recreational vehicles weighing more than 45,000 pounds, which is well above what you'll find on RVezy. You'll also need to be at least 25 years old, and your ID is verified securely through the RVezy platform before pickup. Visiting from another country? Grab an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto association before you fly in. Most first-time renters are pleasantly surprised at how straightforward it is to rent an RV in Indiana.
in.gov/bmv/licenses-permits-ids/learners-permits-and-drivers-licenses-overview/drivers-license/Is my Lafayette RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Absolutely. Every RV rental in Lafayette, IN booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road with real peace of mind. You choose your coverage level during checkout (it is not set by the host), and the plan provides financial protection for most damages to the vehicle while you are using it. While it is not traditional auto insurance, it offers significant coverage between Lafayette and your destination. Pro tip: record a short walkthrough video at pickup with your host so everyone is aligned on the RV's condition before your Indiana adventure begins.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Lafayette RV rental?
You are not locked in the moment you book, which is one of the best things about renting through RVezy. Every RV rental in Lafayette, IN comes with the standard RVezy cancellation policy, including a money-back grace period after booking so you have room to adjust if plans change. Final terms depend on how far out from your trip you cancel, with extra consideration for special circumstances like natural disasters or severe weather (handy in tornado-prone central Indiana). Cancellation policies are set by RVezy, not by individual hosts, so you get consistent treatment across every listing. Pro tip: book early to lock in your dates for Purdue parents' weekend or the Feast of the Hunters' Moon at Fort Ouiatenon, then relax knowing you have flexibility.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Lafayette RV trip?
Yes, your pup is welcome on the road with you. Plenty of hosts offer pet-friendly RV rentals in Lafayette, and you can filter for them directly on RVezy in just a couple of clicks. Once you are rolling, Indiana state parks like Prophetstown allow leashed pets (six-foot leash required) throughout the campground and on most trails, and the Wabash Heritage Trail through Lafayette is a favorite for dog walks. Columbian Park in downtown Lafayette also has shady spots perfect for a midday break. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees, then pack a collapsible water bowl since central Indiana summers can hit the upper 80s.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/prophetstown-state-park/Can my RV rental be delivered to a campground near Lafayette?
Yes, and it is a game-changer for first-timers. Many hosts offer RV delivery in Lafayette directly to Prophetstown State Park, Wolf's Leisure Time Campground, Crawfordsville KOA, or even your driveway if you are staying with family near Purdue. Your host will tow or drive the RV to the site, level it, connect to hookups, and walk you through everything from the awning to the water heater. That means you skip the stress of driving a big rig through downtown Lafayette or merging onto I-65. Pro tip: ask about delivery to a full-hookup site at Prophetstown so your motorhome or trailer is fully set up when you arrive.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/prophetstown-state-park/How far can I travel on a Lafayette RV trip?

Cincinnati and Louisville are both reachable in under four hours. Mileage policies vary by host, with some offering unlimited mileage and others including 100 to 150 free miles per day plus a small per-mile fee beyond that. Wolf's Leisure Time Campground sits along the Wabash River with a pool and family amenities. in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/prophetstown-state-park/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Lafayette?
Late spring through early fall is prime time for an RV road trip from Lafayette, with the sweet spot running from mid-May through early October. Summer highs in Lafayette average in the low to mid 80s, while nights stay comfortable in the 60s, perfect for campfires at Prophetstown. Fall (late September into October) brings stunning color along the Wabash River and Sugar Creek, plus cooler driving conditions and lower campground prices. Spring is gorgeous but watch for thunderstorms in May, when the area sees its highest rainfall. Pro tip: aim for the Feast of the Hunters' Moon at Fort Ouiatenon in early October, a beloved 18th-century reenactment festival just outside West Lafayette.
weather.gov/ind/climategraphlafCan I rent an RV in Lafayette in the winter?
Yes, winter RV rental in Lafayette is absolutely doable, and it can be a magical way to experience snowy Indiana woodlands without the summer crowds. Many hosts offer year-round availability, and some RVs come equipped with heated holding tanks, propane furnaces, and insulation packages built for cold-weather camping. Prophetstown State Park stays open year-round, with seasonal services adjusted in the colder months. Pro tip: when you message the host, ask whether the RV has heated and enclosed tanks, then plan to use shore power at full-hookup sites to keep things toasty when Lafayette dips into the teens and 20s in January and February.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/prophetstown-state-park/I've never driven an RV before. Is it really doable around Lafayette?
You've got this, and Lafayette is honestly one of the friendlier places in the country to learn. The area is mostly flat with wide, well-maintained roads, and I-65 is a straight shot connecting Lafayette to Indianapolis and Chicago. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup covering the dashboard, hookups, slides, and dump procedure, so you're never left guessing. If you're nervous about size, choose a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer, both of which drive much like a large van or pickup. Pro tip: do a quick practice loop in the parking lot of the Tippecanoe Mall on Creasy Lane before heading out, then build confidence with a short first night at Prophetstown just 15 minutes away.
secure.in.gov/bmv/licenses-permits-ids/learners-permits-and-drivers-licenses-overview/learners-permit/drivers-manual/What if my RV breaks down during my Lafayette trip?
Take a breath, you are covered. Every RV rental in Lafayette, IN booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, no matter where you are on your Indiana road trip. Whether you have a flat tire on I-65, a dead battery at Wolf's Leisure Time Campground, or a mechanical hiccup somewhere along the Wabash, one phone call gets help on the way. Your host is also typically just a message away for quick troubleshooting tips, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after every trip. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number in your phone before pickup and snap a photo of the RV's VIN so the call goes faster if you ever need it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Lafayette RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is totally fine, and a Lafayette RV trip is the perfect launchpad for it. You can cross freely into Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, and beyond on any RVezy booking, which makes destinations like Mackinac Island (about 6 hours north) or the Great Smoky Mountains (about 8 hours southeast) very doable. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance coverage, so message the host directly before booking if Canada is on your itinerary. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: popular multi-state runs from Lafayette include Chicago to Wisconsin Dells and the Indiana Dunes to Michigan's west coast wine country.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much fuel will I burn on a Lafayette RV trip?
Indiana is a fuel-friendly state, which keeps your Lafayette RV trip budget reasonable. Expect roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class A motorhome, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C, and 15 to 20 MPG for a Class B campervan or a truck towing a travel trailer. Indiana gas prices typically run close to the national average in the Lafayette area. For a 200-mile weekend loop through Prophetstown and Turkey Run State Park, plan on roughly $60 to $100 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fuel up at the Costco or Sam's Club on the south side of Lafayette for some of the lowest prices in town.
gasprices.aaa.com/state-gas-price-averages/How far in advance should I book a campground near Lafayette?
For Prophetstown State Park, book as early as you can. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reservation system, camp.in.gov, opens campsites up to six months in advance, and summer weekends, holiday weekends, and Purdue football weekends often fill within hours of release. Private campgrounds like Wolf's Leisure Time and Crawfordsville KOA are usually easier to grab a few weeks out. Pro tip: if Prophetstown is sold out, target a midweek arrival (Sunday through Wednesday), or watch for cancellations because sites turn over regularly close to the booking window.
camp.in.gov/What are driving conditions like around Lafayette?
Driving an RV around Lafayette is genuinely easy compared to most US metros. The terrain is flat to gently rolling, I-65 cuts north-south with wide lanes and big-rig-friendly exits, and US-52 and State Road 26 connect you to nearby state parks without any mountain passes or tight switchbacks. Watch for two local quirks: summer thunderstorms (especially May and June) can bring quick downpours, and central Indiana sits in tornado country, so download a weather app and know your campground's storm shelter. Winter brings occasional snow and ice from December through February. Pro tip: avoid downtown Lafayette's older brick streets near the Tippecanoe County Courthouse in a large motorhome and stick to State Road 26 or Sagamore Parkway instead.
weather.gov/ind/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Lafayette?
Most campgrounds offering RV camping in Lafayette come well-equipped. Prophetstown State Park's Spruce Loop has full hookups (water, sewer, 50-amp electric) plus a modern comfort station with heated showers, while the 200s loop offers electric-only sites near a central dump station and water fill. Wolf's Leisure Time has a swimming pool, basketball court, and river access. Crawfordsville KOA offers full hookups, Wi-Fi, and a camp store. Indiana state park campgrounds typically have a dump station near the entrance and frost-free water spigots through late fall. Pro tip: Prophetstown's aquatic center with a lazy river and zero-entry pool is a hit with families and is only steps from your campsite.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/prophetstown-state-park/What's inside a typical RV rental in Lafayette?
You will be impressed by how comfortable a modern RV rental in Lafayette can be. Most Class C motorhomes and travel trailers on RVezy sleep 4 to 8 people with a queen bed, bunk options, and convertible dinettes. Standard features include a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a wet bath or full bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, propane furnace, and a TV. Many also include Wi-Fi boosters, outdoor speakers, awnings, and onboard generators, great for boondocking on the way to Indiana Dunes. Seatbelted seating is standard for everyone traveling. Pro tip: filter listings by sleeps count and check the photos for a campervan rental in Lafayette if you want a smaller, easier-to-drive option for a Purdue game weekend.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lafayette%2C%20IndianaWhat add-ons and options are popular with Lafayette RV rentals?
Hosts in Lafayette make it easy to customize your trip. Popular motorhome rental Lafayette add-ons include camping chairs and tables, generators (typically $25 to $50 per day), bike racks, propane refills, linen and kitchen kits, and even outdoor grills. Many hosts offer delivery and setup for a flat fee based on distance, plus optional dump and refill service so you skip the dirty work. Pickup and dropoff are usually at the host's home or a meeting point nearby, and mileage policies range from unlimited to 100 to 150 free miles per day. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any add-ons you want, and ask about a Purdue game-day tailgate setup if your trip lands on a home football Saturday.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lafayette%2C%20IndianaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and fully handled through the RVezy platform, so you never have to hand cash to a host. When you book your RV rental Indiana trip, you pay the rental total securely online with a credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit is also pre-authorized (held, not charged) on your card before the trip begins as protection against any incidental damages, and it is kept separate from the booking payment. Assuming the RV comes back the way you got it, that hold is released after your trip ends. Pro tip: take dated photos and a short video of the RV's interior, exterior, and mileage at both pickup and dropoff. That five-minute habit is the single best way to keep your deposit return smooth and stress-free.
