Long Beach camping overview
Long Beach sits on the southern shore of Lake Michigan in LaPorte County, Indiana, adjacent to Michigan City and only a short drive from the beaches and dune country of Indiana Dunes National Park. The town itself is residential, so RV travelers base out of nearby campgrounds and use Long Beach mainly for lakefront access, walking the shoreline, and reaching the surrounding parks. Michigan City Campground offers the closest full-service RV base, while Sand Creek Campground provides another option a short drive inland. Public-land options are anchored by Indiana Dunes State Park in Chesterton and Dunewood Campground inside Indiana Dunes National Park, both within about a half-hour drive. Across the state line, Warren Dunes State Park in southwest Michigan adds another Lake Michigan dune-and-beach campground. The area is easy to reach from I-94 and U.S. 12, and it works well as a weekend or week-long summer destination centered on beach access, hiking, and birdwatching.
Things to do near Long Beach
The main draws are Lake Michigan beaches and the dune landscapes on both sides of the Indiana and Michigan state line. Indiana Dunes National Park offers roughly 50 miles of trails crossing dunes, wetlands, prairies, rivers, and forests, with beach access points spread along the shore between Gary and Michigan City. Indiana Dunes State Park protects large sand dunes that tower nearly 200 feet above Lake Michigan and has its own beach and trail network. To the east, Warren Dunes State Park features a dune formation rising 260 feet above the lake, 3 miles of shoreline, and 6 miles of hiking trails. Birdwatching is strong during spring and fall migration, and Michigan City adds a lighthouse, marina, and downtown dining within a few minutes of Long Beach.
