Campgrounds near Morocco, Indiana
Morocco sits in rural Newton County in northwest Indiana, roughly 70 miles south of Chicago and about halfway between Chicago and Indianapolis along the I-65 corridor, just west of the US 41 and Indiana 114 junction. The town serves as an access point for Willow Slough Fish and Wildlife Area, a 9,956-acre state property with a 1,200-acre lake, trails, fishing, and primitive camping, and for Kankakee Sands, where a bison herd grazes restored prairie.
RV travelers have a mix of options within a short drive. Newton County Fairgrounds and Pioneer Family Campground, Inc. sit closest to town, while Oak Lake RV Resort and Lake Holiday Camp-Resort offer lake-oriented family camping farther out. Kankakee South KOA Holiday, in Chebanse, Illinois, sits about one hour south of downtown Chicago and works well as a base for travelers combining a Morocco stop with a Chicago day trip.
Access is straightforward for large rigs. Interstate 65, US 41, and Indiana 114 keep most approaches on wide, RV-friendly routes.
Things to do near Morocco
Willow Slough Fish and Wildlife Area is the main draw. J.C. Murphey Lake anchors more than 1,200 acres of fishing water and numerous ponds, with largemouth bass, bluegill, channel catfish, redear sunfish, crappie, and northern pike among the primary species. Boats are restricted to electric motors only, and kayaks and canoes are popular. The property attracts deer, wild turkey, waterfowl, hawks, owls, osprey, bald eagles, and songbirds, and wild blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, walnuts, and spring and fall mushrooms may be gathered on site.
Beyond the wildlife area, families head to Fair Oaks Farms, about 20 miles east near I-65 Exit 220, for its Dairy, Pig, and Crop Adventures, an on-site restaurant, and a U-pick orchard that works well as a rainy-day option for kids.

The practical camping window in Newton County runs from spring through fall. At Willow Slough, water at spigots is available approximately April through October, so shoulder-season stays outside that window mean planning for no potable water on site. Private campgrounds like Oak Lake RV Resort and Lake Holiday Camp-Resort typically follow a similar seasonal rhythm, and Kankakee South KOA Holiday operates April 1 through October 31, with the busiest weekends running from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Fall brings cooler nights, fewer bugs, and active hunting seasons at Willow Slough, which allows deer, quail, rabbit, squirrel, dove, woodcock, waterfowl, and wild turkey hunting under Indiana DNR rules. Non-hunting RV guests should note that daily check-in is required for hunters and that portions of the property may be closed during certain seasons.
Winter camping is possible at some private parks but is limited by cold, snow, and reduced services at state-managed sites.
How to book
Reservation systems vary by property. Willow Slough is straightforward but old-school: the 25 primitive campsites are first-come, first-served, with no reservations taken. Payment is handled on site, and the property office at (219) 285-2704 is the best source for current fees and conditions. Arrive early on summer Fridays and holiday weekends.
Private campgrounds handle bookings online or by phone. At Kankakee South KOA Holiday, check-in for campsites and cabins is 2:00 pm and check-out is 11:00 am, and reservations can be made through the KOA website or by phone. Newton County Fairgrounds, Pioneer Family Campground, Inc., Oak Lake RV Resort, and Lake Holiday Camp-Resort should be booked well in advance for summer weekends through the operator's own website or phone, especially around county fair dates and holiday weekends.
What to expect
This is rural, flat farm country with sandy soils, small lakes, and long horizons. Expect quiet nights, dark skies, and limited cell service in the wildlife areas. Sandy soil at Willow Slough drains well after rain, which helps after Midwest thunderstorms roll through.
Amenities differ sharply between public and private sites. Willow Slough is primitive: no electrical hookups (generators are permitted), flush toilets, and a dump station on the property, but no showers. Private parks in the area generally offer full or partial hookups, laundry, and playgrounds, and Kankakee South KOA Holiday adds a seasonal pool open Memorial Day through Labor Day and is pet-friendly across cabins, RV, and tent sites.
Grocery runs are easiest in Morocco, Kentland, or Rensselaer.
