Camping near Rensselaer, Indiana
Rensselaer sits in Jasper County in northwest Indiana, about 90 minutes south of Chicago along Interstate 65. The Iroquois River runs through town, and the surrounding landscape is a mix of farmland, oak groves, and small lakes, which shapes the local camping options. Most parks in the area are private family-run RV resorts oriented around fishing lakes and seasonal sites, rather than large state or federal campgrounds.
Close-in options include Acorn Oaks Campground, Oak Lake RV Resort, Lake Holiday Camp-Resort, Pioneer Family Campground, Inc., and the Newton County Fairgrounds. These range from full-hookup RV resorts with pools and lakes to primitive fairground camping used during events.
For public land, Willow Slough Fish and Wildlife Area in neighboring Newton County offers primitive camping near J.C. Murphey Lake, and Indiana Dunes State Park and Indiana Dunes National Park lie roughly 90 miles north along Lake Michigan for campers willing to drive further.
Things to do around Rensselaer
Fishing drives most trips in this area. J.C. Murphey Lake at Willow Slough is known for largemouth bass, and the private lakes at Oak Lake RV Resort and Lake Holiday Camp-Resort give families easy shoreline access without leaving the campground. The Iroquois River offers paddling for calm-water kayakers.
Wildlife watching is strong in fall and spring. The Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area near Medaryville is well known for its sandhill crane migration each autumn. Cyclists can use the 20-mile paved loop road around Willow Slough FWA, which is open to bicycles.
In town, Rensselaer has small parks and a historic downtown square. Fair Oaks Farms, a large agritourism destination with dairy and pig adventures, is a short drive north on I-65 and works well as a rainy-day stop for families.

June - August
80° / 63°F 102 mmWarm and humid; peak bookings, thunderstorms common.

December - February
33° / 21°F 58 mmCold and snowy; most private RV parks closed.
The main RV season runs from roughly April through October. Most private campgrounds in Jasper and Newton counties open in spring once overnight lows stay reliably above freezing, and many close or reduce services in mid to late October. Summer weekends and holidays around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day fill early, particularly at lake-based resorts.
Spring brings variable weather and higher rainfall. May is typically the wettest month, so low-lying sites can be soft. Summer is warm and humid, with July averaging a high near 81°F and a low near 64°F, and afternoon thunderstorms are common.
Fall is often the most comfortable stretch for RV travel: cooler nights, fewer bugs, and harvest scenery across the farm country. At Willow Slough FWA, campground restrooms and water spigots are available approximately April through October, so shoulder-season campers should confirm services before arrival.
How to book a campsite
Private campgrounds near Rensselaer, including Acorn Oaks Campground, Oak Lake RV Resort, Lake Holiday Camp-Resort, and Pioneer Family Campground, Inc., take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. Many hold a large share of sites for seasonal renters, so transient RV inventory is limited. Book summer weekends several weeks ahead, and longer for holidays.
Public-land camping uses different systems. Willow Slough FWA provides 25 primitive campsites on a first-come, first-served basis, with flush toilets on site. Indiana state parks such as Indiana Dunes State Park take reservations through the Indiana DNR system. Dunewood Campground at Indiana Dunes National Park uses Recreation.gov on a rolling six-month window, and the campground operates from spring through fall.
What to expect on arrival
Expect a mix of small, family-owned RV parks rather than large resort chains. Sites at Oak Lake RV Resort, Lake Holiday Camp-Resort, and Pioneer Family Campground, Inc. typically offer water and electric, with 30-amp service common and 50-amp available at some pull-throughs. Interior roads can be gravel and tight in places, so drivers of longer Class A rigs should ask about site length when booking.
Seasonal campers make up a significant share of the guest base at several of these parks, so weekend evenings tend to be social rather than remote-feeling. The Newton County Fairgrounds offers primitive fairground-style camping tied to events.
Cell coverage is generally reliable along I-65 and in town but weaker in the wildlife areas. Groceries, fuel, propane, and RV supplies are available in Rensselaer.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Rensselaer, IN?
RV rental in Rensselaer is one of the most affordable ways to explore northwest Indiana, with most rigs falling between $95 and $275 per night depending on type. Travel trailers and pop-ups start around $90 to $130, Class C motorhomes typically run $175 to $250, and larger Class A coaches sit at the top end. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Rensselaer%2C%20IndianaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Indiana?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Rensselaer, Indiana. Indiana does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes or towable trailers under typical rental weights. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified inside the platform during checkout, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the US? An International Driving Permit (IDP) paired with your home license works. Most first-time renters are surprised how quickly they're behind the wheel and heading toward Jasper County's quiet country roads.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs protection included with my RV rental in Rensselaer?
Yes, every RV rental in Rensselaer, IN automatically includes an RVezy renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit I-65 with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers physical damage to the vehicle during your trip, and you choose your coverage level (not the host) at checkout to match your comfort and budget. This is meaningful financial protection if something unexpected happens on your Rensselaer RV trip. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers before you book so you can lock in the right level the moment you find your dream rig.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Rensselaer RV booking?
Booking an RV in Rensselaer is low-risk because RVezy sets a clear, standardized cancellation policy that applies to every reservation on the platform, not the individual host. There's a money-back grace period right after booking, plus additional protections for major travel disruptions, all detailed in your booking confirmation. Because the policy is standardized, you won't see different rules buried in each listing, which makes comparing rigs across Jasper County simpler. Pro tip: book earlier rather than later for summer weekends near Fair Oaks Farms, because the best pet-friendly and delivery-ready RVs in Rensselaer go fast, and you're covered if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Rensselaer RV trip?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Rensselaer is easy to find on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see rigs from owners who happily welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) onboard. Many local campgrounds are dog-friendly too: Caboose Lake Campground and Oak Lake Family Campground allow leashed pets, and Potawatomi Park along the Iroquois River in town is a great spot for a morning walk before hitting the road. Pro tip: message the host before booking to share your pet's size and breed, and ask about any pet cleaning fee so there are no surprises when you return your home-on-wheels.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Rensselaer%2C%20IndianaCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Rensselaer?
Yes, RV delivery in Rensselaer is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who don't want to drive a big rig on I-65. Many local hosts will deliver and set up your RV directly at campgrounds like Caboose Lake or Oak Lake Family Campground, or even at your private driveway in Jasper County. They'll level it, hook up power and water, run through the systems with you, and leave you ready to relax. Filter by Delivery on the search page to see hosts offering this service, then message them with your destination. Pro tip: delivery fees are usually based on round-trip mileage, so picking a closer campground keeps costs down.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Rensselaer%2C%20IndianaHow far can I drive on a Rensselaer RV trip?
You've got serious range when you rent an RV in Rensselaer thanks to its position right on I-65. Chicago is about 80 miles north (90 minutes), Indianapolis is roughly 90 miles south (under 2 hours), Indiana Dunes National Park sits about 60 miles northwest, Starved Rock State Park in Illinois is about 90 miles west, and Turkey Run State Park is around 75 miles south. Each host sets a daily mileage policy (commonly 100 to 150 free miles per night), and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is gold for a longer Indiana road trip. Pro tip: filter listings by unlimited miles if you're planning a big multi-park loop.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Rensselaer%2C%20IndianaWhere are the best campgrounds near Rensselaer?

Caboose Lake Campground (just east of town off SR-114) is a local favorite with full hookups, a stocked lake, and railroad-themed charm. Oak Lake Family Campground south of town offers a swimming lake, pool, and family activities. About 20 minutes north, Lake Holiday Camping Resort in DeMotte has resort-style amenities. For state-park lovers, Tippecanoe River State Park is roughly 35 miles east with electric sites and river access. Pro tip: book summer weekends 2 to 3 months ahead, especially around Little Cousin Jasper Festival weekend in September.
in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/tippecanoe-river-state-park/When is the best time to visit Rensselaer in an RV?
The sweet spot for RV camping in Rensselaer is late April through mid-October, with the best weather running from late May to early October. Summer highs sit around 82 to 86°F with warm, humid nights perfect for campfires; spring and fall swing between 55 and 75°F daytime with crisp evenings and stunning Jasper County color in mid-October. Winter drops into the 20s and 30s with occasional snow, so most local campgrounds close from November through March. Pro tip: target the shoulder months of May, September, and early October for the best mix of mild weather, lower rates, and open campsites.
weather.gov/iwx/I've never rented an RV before. Is it really doable?
Yes, and Rensselaer is one of the friendliest spots in Indiana for first time renting an RV. The roads around Jasper County are mostly flat, low-traffic county routes and wide-shouldered state highways like US-231 and SR-114, which makes for a forgiving learning environment. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving tips, hookups, the propane system, slides, and holding tanks, and they're a text away during your trip. If driving still feels intimidating, filter for Delivery and let the host bring the RV to your campground. Pro tip: do a short practice loop on the country roads west of town before heading north toward Chicago traffic.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Rensselaer%2C%20IndianaWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV on my trip?
You're never on your own. Every motorhome rental in Rensselaer includes 24/7 roadside assistance through the RVezy protection plan, covering things like flat tires, battery jumps, lockouts, and towing no matter where I-65 takes you. Your host is also your first call for quick troubleshooting (think a tripped breaker or a quirky water pump), and RVezy's support team is reachable any time before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN, plate, and roadside assistance number during your walkthrough so everything's on your phone if you ever need it on a back road near Willow Slough.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Rensselaer RV rental across state lines?
Yes, crossing state lines is one of the best parts of an RV road trip from Rensselaer. The protection plan and roadside coverage follow you anywhere in the continental US, so popular routes like Rensselaer to Indiana Dunes, Rensselaer to Mackinaw City, Michigan, or south to Mammoth Cave, Kentucky are all fair game. Travel into Canada may be allowed but requires host approval and confirmation of cross-border coverage, so message them before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance doesn't extend there. Pro tip: Chicago, Indianapolis, Louisville, and Nashville are all reachable in a single day's drive from Jasper County, making multi-state loops easy.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on an RV trip from Rensselaer?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost, but Rensselaer's location keeps it manageable. Indiana gas prices typically run close to the national average, and Rensselaer's I-65 exit has multiple truck-friendly stations like Pilot and Love's that fit big rigs easily. Expect roughly 7 to 10 mpg for Class A motorhomes, 10 to 14 mpg for Class C, 18 to 22 mpg for Class B campervans, and 12 to 16 mpg when towing a travel trailer. For a 500-mile round trip in a Class C, budget around $150 to $200 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Rensselaer before heading into Chicago, where prices jump significantly inside the metro.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Rensselaer?
For the best campgrounds near Rensselaer, aim to book 2 to 4 months ahead for summer weekends and holidays, and 2 to 3 weeks ahead for midweek stays. Indiana State Park campgrounds like Tippecanoe River and Prophetstown use the camp.IN.gov reservation system and open bookings six months in advance, which is when the prime riverside sites disappear fast. Private parks like Caboose Lake and Oak Lake take reservations directly through their websites or phone. Pro tip: if you strike out on a Saturday, try a Sunday-to-Thursday stay instead; you'll often score the nicest sites and lower nightly rates, leaving more room in your budget for a Fair Oaks Farms day trip.
camp.in.gov/What are driving conditions like around Rensselaer?
Driving an RV around Rensselaer is refreshingly easy: northwest Indiana is mostly flat farmland with straight, wide roads and minimal mountain or winding terrain. I-65 runs right through town, giving you fast access north to Chicago and south to Indianapolis, while US-231 and SR-114 are calm two-lane state routes ideal for getting comfortable behind the wheel. Watch for two things: sudden summer thunderstorms with crosswinds (slow down in high winds), and winter ice from December to February. Pro tip: avoid driving into Chicago during weekday rush hours (6 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m.) and the Borman Expressway near Gary, where construction and tolls can stress new RV drivers.
in.gov/indot/travel-information/What hookups and dump stations can I expect at Rensselaer campgrounds?

Potable water fills are available at every park entrance. Many local hosts also offer generators, outdoor speakers, leveling blocks, and starter kitchen kits. Pro tip: ask your host about Wi-Fi hotspots and solar; signal can dip on the back roads around Willow Slough Fish and Wildlife Area, and a hotspot keeps the kids happy.

Payment for your RV rental in Rensselaer is handled entirely through the secure RVezy platform, so you never hand cash or a check to the host. You'll pay the booking amount (rental, fees, and chosen protection plan) by credit or debit card at checkout, and a refundable security deposit is separate from the booking payment and pre-authorized on your card before the trip starts. The hold is released after a smooth return with no damage or extra mileage charges. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a short video of the RV's interior and exterior at both pickup and dropoff so any deposit questions are easy to resolve.
