Campgrounds and RV parks near Amelia, LA

The Atchafalaya Basin is the main draw. Swamp and airboat tours launch from nearby Bayou Black and Houma, and inland, coastal, and deep-sea fishing are all within reach. Attakapas Island Wildlife Management Area, accessible only by boat or kayak, offers primitive paddling and wildlife viewing across a large expanse of protected bottomland. On dry land, Kemper Williams Park includes a covered pavilion, bathhouse, tennis courts, picnic grounds, a nature trail, an aviation museum, and an adjacent 18-hole public golf course, specifically The Atchafalaya at Idlewood. A state museum on the property covers regional aviation and lumber industry history. Day trips reach Morgan City's downtown historic district, Cypremort Point State Park on Vermilion Bay, which contains a half-mile stretch of man-made beach with picnic sites, a fishing pavilion, and a sailboat launch, and Houma for Cajun music, Mardi Gras parades in season, and the Southdown Plantation House museum.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel around Amelia. March through May brings warming temperatures and lower humidity than summer. October and November are also popular, with mild highs, drier conditions, and reduced storm activity, and November is typically the driest month, averaging around 67 mm of rainfall over roughly seven rainy days. Summer is hot and humid, with average highs near 89 degrees Fahrenheit in July and August and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. August is the wettest month, averaging about 257 mm of precipitation over 20 rainy days, and it also falls within the statistical peak of Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June 1 through November 30. RV renters planning summer trips should build in flexibility for storm-related closures and monitor National Hurricane Center advisories. Winters are short and mild. January averages a high of 61 degrees Fahrenheit and a low of 47 degrees. Most private parks in the area operate year-round, and winter is a popular season for snowbirds heading to south Louisiana.

Terrain around Amelia is flat, wet, and near sea level. Sites are typically level and easy to navigate, and US 90 provides a straightforward corridor for arriving rigs. Expect Spanish moss, oak canopy, and bayou frontage at many parks, along with mosquitoes and biting insects, especially at dawn and dusk during warm months. Humidity is high most of the year, so RV renters should plan for air conditioning use and confirm hookup amps in advance. Cell coverage is generally reliable along the US 90 corridor but can drop off in deeper swamp areas. Wildlife includes alligators, herons, and a wide range of fish species. Keep food secured, follow posted swimming rules at parks with ponds or lakes, and check burn restrictions before lighting a campfire. Older reviews of Kemper Williams note that the main entrance is not suitable for large or low-clearance rigs, so heeding that advice is wise.
