Campgrounds and RV parks near Bayou Blue, LA

Fishing and boating drive most trips to the area. Houma serves as a jumping-off point for charter fishing, birding, and swamp tours through the wetlands stretching toward the Gulf, and several campgrounds sit on or near water. Guests at Bayou Black RV Park can catch and release fish in the on-site pond, and the property offers concrete, gravel, and grass pads in a quiet country setting. Families traveling with kids often base at resort-style parks with on-site amenities. Hideaway Ponds offers planned activities and live entertainment, two private fishing ponds, and both an indoor heated pool and an outdoor pool with a kiddie pool. Poche Plantation RV Resort Cottage puts guests near the River Road plantations, while Capri Court Motorhome Park and South Houma RV Park work well as base camps for downtown Houma dining, seafood markets, and swamp-tour operators.

South Louisiana has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters. The most comfortable stretches run mid-February through April and October through mid-December, when humidity drops and daytime highs sit in a comfortable range for grilling, fishing, and touring. Spring also lines up with Mardi Gras, crawfish season, and heritage festivals across the region. Summer is the tradeoff season. Daytime highs in Houma average around 91°F in July and August with oppressive humidity, so air conditioning is essential and renters should confirm 30-amp or 50-amp service matches their rig before booking. Afternoon thunderstorms are routine from June through September, and July is typically the wettest month. Hurricane season is the other factor that shapes travel planning. Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through November 30, with peak activity between mid-August and late October when ocean temperatures are warmest. September is generally the most active month for named storms along the Gulf Coast. Renters traveling in late summer should watch National Hurricane Center advisories and keep evacuation routes in mind.

Terrain around Bayou Blue is flat and low. The area sits only a few feet above sea level, creating a wetland ecosystem where camping often means proximity to water. Clay-heavy soil retains water even after modest rainfall, and most sites feature gravel or concrete pads rather than natural surfaces, so leveling blocks and a good doormat are useful. Expect mosquitoes and other biting insects year-round, with peaks after rain and in warmer months. Bring repellent, screens, and long sleeves for evenings. Alligators and snakes can be present in ponds and canals, so campgrounds like Bayou Black RV Park post no-swimming rules for their fishing ponds. Many of the closest RV parks host a mix of short-stay travelers and longer-term workers tied to the oil, marine, and seafood industries, so the vibe tends to be practical and quiet rather than resort-focused, aside from Hideaway Ponds and Poche Plantation. Cell coverage is generally reliable near Houma but can thin on back roads toward Gibson and the coast.
