Campgrounds and RV parks near Charenton, LA

The Atchafalaya Basin is the main draw. Lake Fausse Pointe State Park sits at the edge of a vast water wilderness surrounded by ancient cypress, with fishing, boating, and canoeing opportunities throughout the labyrinth of waterways that wind through the Basin. A visitor center complex includes a boat dock with rentals, and a nature center runs interpretive programs about the surrounding environment. On the coast, Burns Point offers a view of East Cote Blanche Bay with a fishing pier, picnic shelters, a public boat launch, dump station, and about 34 waterfront campsites. Families often pair a day at Kemper Williams Park St Mary Parish Park with the Wedell-Williams Aviation Museum in Patterson, and history-minded travelers can visit the Chitimacha Cultural Center in Charenton itself.

South Louisiana has a humid subtropical climate. The Franklin area, just southeast of Charenton, experiences hot summers and mild winters with high annual precipitation, particularly wet summers with heavy downpours or afternoon thunderstorms, and spring as the driest season. Late October through April is the most comfortable window for RV travel, with lower humidity, fewer mosquitoes, and reliable fishing on the basin. Spring brings wildflowers, migrating songbirds, and busy weekends at the state park. Summer heat and humidity are intense, and afternoon storms are routine, though early-morning paddling and fishing remain productive. Hurricane season runs June through November, with peak activity in August and September; coastal sites like Burns Point can flood during tropical systems, so travelers should monitor NHC advisories. Fall cools quickly after the first cold fronts push through in October, and this is prime time for bass fishing and cypress color in the basin. Winter camping is popular with snowbirds, and hard freezes are brief when they occur.

Expect flat terrain, cypress-tupelo swamp, and long straight parish roads through sugarcane fields. Lake Fausse Pointe State Park offers a genuine off-the-grid experience, with limited cell service and largely undeveloped surroundings, so travelers should download maps before arriving. The developed RV loop provides water and electric sites with a comfort station, showers, picnic tables, playground, and dump station near the park office. At Burns Point, sites sit close to the bay behind a rock revetment, cell coverage is generally strong, and alligator sightings in the adjacent water are common. Bring insect repellent year-round, secure food and trash, and plan for humid nights even in shoulder seasons. Grocery runs are easiest in Franklin, New Iberia, or Morgan City.
