Campgrounds near Clayton, Louisiana
Clayton is a small town in Concordia Parish in northeast Louisiana, set in the Mississippi River floodplain roughly a half hour drive from Natchez, Mississippi. The area sits within the Natchez, MS-LA micropolitan region and gives RV travelers access to both Louisiana and Mississippi state park systems along with several private RV parks on the river corridor.
Options close to town range from full hookup private parks to state park campgrounds with lake frontage. River View RV Park And Resort, Lakeview Paradise RV Park, and Plantation RV Park serve travelers who want commercial amenities near US 65 and the river bridges. For public land camping, Campground A at Natchez State Park sits across the river in Mississippi, and Lake Bruin State Park is a short drive north into Tensas Parish.
The mix suits families splitting time between town errands in Natchez and quieter lake or woodland stays. Most sites in the area are open year round, with peak demand tied to spring wildflower and fall foliage weekends.
Things to do near Clayton
Water recreation dominates the area. Lake Bruin has more than 3,000 acres of water surface open to freshwater fishing, water sports, and pleasure boating, with three large fishing piers, a year-round boat launch, a boat shed for docking, and rental flat-bottom boats available. Largemouth bass fishing is popular all year, with the best months being April, May, June, September, and October. Crappie and bluegill are also common catches, and a water playground at the state park is popular with families.
Across the river, Natchez State Park offers fishing on Natchez Lake (site of the state-record largemouth bass), disc golf, hiking, picnicking, and wildlife viewing. Historic Natchez itself offers antebellum home tours, the southern terminus of the Natchez Trace Parkway, and river overlooks. Tensas River National Wildlife Refuge, north of Lake Bruin, adds birding and backcountry options.

The region has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and hot, humid summers. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with daytime highs generally in the 70s and low 80s Fahrenheit and lower humidity than midsummer. Wildflowers and dogwoods bloom in March and April, and hardwood color arrives along the bluffs in late October and November.
Summer brings heat indices above 100 and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. August is the wettest month, while June is comparatively drier. Sites with shade fill early on holiday weekends, and lake sites at Lake Bruin State Park are the most requested for swim and boat access.
Winter is the quiet season. Freezes occur but are usually brief, and campgrounds remain open year round. Anglers still target crappie and bass on Lake Bruin, and lower demand makes weekend reservations at state parks easier to secure than in shoulder seasons.
