Campgrounds and RV parks near Des Allemands, LA

Water is the main draw. Lac des Allemands is known for its catfish, and charter trips, airboat rides, and guided swamp tours run out of the bayou. Alligators are a common sight from spring through fall, and the area hosts hundreds of bird species, including hawks, eagles, and herons. On land, families can drive into New Orleans for the French Quarter, City Park, and the Audubon Zoo, or head south toward Houma for Cajun music and Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center exhibits. The Louisiana Catfish Festival has called Des Allemands home for decades and features home-cooked catfish, catfish boulettes, gumbo and jambalaya, seafood po'boys, live music, and fairground rides. Bayou Segnette State Park adds boat launches, playgrounds, and walking trails suitable for kids.

Louisiana bayou country has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and long, hot summers. Winters are mild though sometimes marked by short cold waves, and summers are long, hot, and humid with frequent thunderstorms. Spring and fall are the most comfortable RV windows, with lower humidity, active wildlife, and better paddling conditions. Summer brings peak heat, biting insects, and afternoon storms. Annual precipitation falls year-round with no true dry season, and the wettest months are typically June through August. Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with peak activity from mid-August through October, and coastal Louisiana parks occasionally close or evacuate for tropical systems. Winter is the quietest season. Daytime temperatures stay generally mild, sites are easier to book, and fishing continues, though brief cold snaps and heavy rain events do occur. Louisiana State Parks charge a higher weekday nightly rate from April through September and a lower rate from October through March, reflecting the busier warm-weather months at parks like Bayou Segnette.

Expect flat, low-elevation sites, warm humid air, and abundant wildlife. Mosquitoes and other biting insects are heaviest from late spring through early fall, so screens, repellent, and a bug-proof awning setup help. Alligators live in area canals and ponds, so keep pets leashed and children close to the pad. At Bayou Segnette State Park, sites are practical rather than fancy. The campground has 98 sites with water and electrical hookups, accommodates tents, trailers, and RVs, and includes an RV dump station, comfort stations with hot showers, and free laundry. Two playgrounds and a boat launch are on site. Cell service can be spotty in some park areas, so download maps before arrival. Private parks in the corridor lean toward full hookups, gravel or concrete pads, and easy highway access rather than heavy amenities.
