Erath camping overview
Erath sits in Vermilion Parish in the heart of Louisiana's Cajun country, about 20 minutes south of Lafayette and a short drive from Abbeville. The area is flat, bayou-crossed farmland close to the Gulf, and RV options range from small full-hookup private parks in and around town to a full-service state park on the Vermilion River.
The closest overnight options include Quality Sports Authority And RV Park and Acadian Oasis RV Park near Erath itself, and Betty's RV Park in nearby Abbeville, which has expanded to 17 full-hookup sites with complimentary wireless internet. La Boulaie RV Park and Campground offers another private option in the surrounding area.
For a public-land experience, Palmetto Island State Park is located about 6 miles south of Abbeville, with 6 cabins near the Vermilion River and a boat launch in the park. The park has 95 campsites available for RV camping, with 20 sites that include an extra tent camping pad, making it the largest and most amenity-rich campground in the immediate area.
Things to do near Erath
Water activities anchor most trips. At Palmetto Island State Park, a boat launch on the Vermilion River supports fishing and boating, while interior lagoons let canoers and kayakers get an up-close look at native plants and animals. The Cypress Trail makes an excellent option for a quick walk at just under three-quarters of a mile, a short nature trail through this biodiverse ecosystem, with alligators, deer, and wading birds often seen.
Off-site, the region is built around Cajun culture. Abbeville offers historic downtown squares, long-running oyster houses, and live Cajun French and Zydeco music. Betty's RV Park hosts a daily Happy Hour, allowing guests to connect and exchange insights about the local area, and organized outings often visit accordion makers and Zydeco breakfasts in Breaux Bridge. Fall brings a steady stream of festivals across Vermilion Parish, including the Cattle Festival in Abbeville on the first weekend of October and the Giant Omelette Celebration in November.
