Campgrounds near French Settlement
French Settlement sits along the Amite River in Livingston Parish, roughly halfway between Baton Rouge and the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain. The area is flat, wooded, and threaded with bayous, which shapes what RV camping looks like here: small riverside parks, family-run RV resorts, and one full-service state park within easy towing distance.
Close-in options include Old River RV Park, Lakeside RV Resort, and Gator RV Park, which cater primarily to RVs with hookups and quick access to the river and lake systems. For a larger, resort-style stop with pool and structured kid activities, Baton Rouge KOA Holiday works well as a base for city day trips.
For a true swamp-and-woods experience, Tickfaw State Park is located about halfway between Baton Rouge, New Orleans and the Northshore town of Covington, and it is easy to reach all three cities within an hour's drive. It offers the most natural setting of the group.
Things to do near French Settlement
Paddling and fishing dominate the local outdoors. The Amite, Tickfaw, and Blood rivers all feed into Lake Maurepas, and boat launches are common. At Tickfaw State Park, the Tickfaw is a slow, meandering river suited to beginners, and canoes are available for rent at the park. Fishing for largemouth bass is a popular pastime.
For families, the state park adds structured options: hiking through over a mile of boardwalks overlooking the cypress-tupelo swamp, plus a nature center with exhibits and an 800-gallon aquarium that holds native fishes found in the Tickfaw River. The water playground is open Tuesdays through Sundays April 1 through Sept. 30, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Day trips from a French Settlement basecamp reach Baton Rouge attractions, plantation homes along the River Road, and New Orleans within about an hour.

Southeast Louisiana is a year-round camping region, but the shoulder seasons are the most comfortable for RV travel. Spring, from March through May, brings warm days without the peak heat, with average highs climbing from the low 70s to the mid 80s Fahrenheit. Fall, from September through November, brings similar mild conditions and gradually lower humidity, with November typically the driest month of the year.
Summer is hot, humid, and thunderstorm-prone, with highs consistently around 91°F and heavy afternoon rain common. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, and southeast Louisiana sits squarely in the risk zone. RVers traveling in this window should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories and have an evacuation plan.
Winter and spring can bring high water on the Tickfaw. The park site serves the region by detaining floodwaters when winter and spring rains overflow the steep banks of the Tickfaw River, and occasional flooding renders several tent sites unreservable during those stretches.

Excellent experience renting this camper. It was all set up ready to go when we arrived at our camp site and it was very spacious for my family. The outside kitchen with mini fridge and Blackstone grill was very convenient. I cooked breakfast on it both mornings. Thanks for a great experience at Brushy Creek Ranch!

What to expect
Expect Gulf Coast humidity, biting insects, and rich wildlife. Alligators are part of the landscape, not a novelty. Keep your distance and do not feed the alligators; feeding gators is prohibited by state law. Bring strong insect repellent for mosquitoes and gnats, especially near the swamps at dawn and dusk.
RV access is generally straightforward. At Tickfaw State Park, Loop B has 30 back-in sites that can accommodate RVs and trailers up to 81 feet in length, with 50-amp electric service and water hookups. Sites include picnic tables, fire rings, and are all pet-friendly, although pets are not allowed in any park buildings. Baton Rouge KOA offers paved roads, concrete site pads, and full hookups.
Cell coverage is reliable near the interstates and thinner in the deeper swamp sections. Grocery and fuel stops are easiest along I-12 and US-61.
