Campgrounds and RV parks near Grand Point, LA

The stretch of the Mississippi around Grand Point is Louisiana's Plantation Country. Antebellum homes such as Oak Alley, Laura, and San Francisco Plantation sit within a short drive along River Road, and several offer guided tours suitable for kids. Swamp and airboat tours run out of nearby Sorrento and Des Allemands, giving families reliable alligator sightings in warmer months. Downtown New Orleans, with the French Quarter, streetcars, and the National WWII Museum, is roughly an hour southeast by interstate. On the Ascension Parish side, Gonzales is known as the Jambalaya Capital and hosts festivals through spring and fall. Houmas House on the Mississippi River offers gardens, restaurants, and overnight accommodations, and is a well-preserved example of raised plantation architecture along River Road.

Spring and fall are the strongest RV seasons around Grand Point. March through May brings warm days, blooming gardens at the plantations, and a heavy festival calendar including the Gonzales Jambalaya Festival and community events across the River Parishes. Sites at destination parks like Poche Plantation RV Resort Cottage tend to fill first on weekends tied to New Orleans Jazz Fest and Mardi Gras, so booking several weeks ahead is standard. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms nearly every day and heat indices well above 100. Shaded, full-hookup sites with reliable 50-amp service are strongly preferred in this window. This is also the core of Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June 1 through November 30, with peak activity from August into October. Renters should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories and be prepared to relocate. Winter is mild by North-American standards, with occasional cold fronts. Snowbird traffic picks up from December through February, and monthly stays at parks like Old River RV Park and B and B RV Park are common.

Terrain is flat, low, and close to sea level, with sugarcane fields, levees, and cypress swamps defining the landscape. Sites are generally level with gravel, grass, or concrete pads, and the water table is high, so heavy rain can leave standing water for a day or two. Mosquitoes and other biting insects are active from spring through fall, and screens, repellent, and awning lights matter more here than in drier regions. Alligators inhabit nearby bayous but rarely enter developed campgrounds. Cell coverage is reliable along the I-10 corridor and thins out on the rural stretches of River Road. Grocery, fuel, and RV supplies are easiest to find in Gonzales, LaPlace, and Sorrento. Louisiana weather can shift quickly, so renters should keep slide toppers retracted during thunderstorms and secure loose gear ahead of frontal passages.
