Campgrounds and RV parks near Hackberry, LA

The Sabine National Wildlife Refuge is the main draw. The Wetland Walkway is a 1.5-mile loop into the marsh, and it is the best short stop for spotting alligators, wading birds, and turtles. Roadside pullouts along Highway 27 include crabbing and fishing access, and the refuge and its roadside recreation areas may be accessed by automobile year round, from dawn until dusk, excluding posted closures. Calcasieu Lake, known locally as Big Lake, is one of the region's top redfish and speckled trout fisheries. South of the refuge, Holly Beach allows driving and dispersed camping directly on the sand, and the beach is known for shelling and birding. The Peveto Woods Sanctuary is roughly 40 acres of coastal chenier habitat used by as many as 2 million birds each year, drawing spring and fall migrants.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel. March through May brings mild temperatures, active neotropical songbird migration, and good conditions for the Wetland Walkway before mosquitoes peak. October and November are cooler, drier, and coincide with the arrival of wintering waterfowl on the refuge, which is a major wintering spot for waterfowl in the Mississippi Flyway. Summer is hot, humid, and buggy, with afternoon thunderstorms common. Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with peak activity from mid-August through October. Cameron Parish sustained extensive damage from hurricanes Rita and Ike, and Laura and Delta struck the parish more recently. Mandatory evacuations of the entire parish are issued when storms threaten, and coastal campgrounds can close on short notice. Winter is mild but wet. Duck season draws hunters to the area from November into January, so private RV parks near Hackberry often fill with hunting parties on weekends.

Private RV parks around Hackberry are working parks, not resorts. Expect level full-hookup sites with 30 and 50 amp service, gravel or shell pads, and easy access to boat launches on Calcasieu Lake. Cell service is generally reliable in Hackberry itself and thins out south of town toward the refuge and the coast. A grocery store and fuel are available in the village. Mosquitoes and biting flies are heavy from late spring through early fall, especially near the marsh. Bring strong repellent and closed footwear on refuge trails. Holly Beach is a dispersed beach-camping area with soft sand near access points and no hookups or potable water. Watch tides, avoid driving on soft dune areas, and check surf and storm advisories before setting up.
