Campgrounds and RV parks near Henderson, LA

The main draw is the swamp itself. Guided swamp tours run daily from McGee's Landing and other Henderson operators, moving through cypress-tupelo stands on Henderson Lake, Lake Bigeaux, and Lake Pelba. Anglers come for bass, sac-au-lait, and bream, and the levee road is a well-known spot for birding and paddling. On the cultural side, Breaux Bridge, the state-designated Crawfish Capital of the World, is minutes away and hosts the annual Crawfish Festival on the first full weekend in May at Parc Hardy. Lafayette adds Festival International and Festival Acadiens et Créoles. For rainy days, the Atchafalaya Welcome Center at exit 121 has interpretive exhibits on basin ecology and culture and serves as a good orientation stop before heading out on the water.

South Louisiana has a humid subtropical climate with long, hot summers and short, mild winters. The most comfortable RV weather runs from mid-October through late April, when highs are pleasant and humidity drops. Spring is also the peak season for crawfish, festivals, and swamp tours, so weekends around the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival, held on the first full weekend in May, book up well in advance. High water in the Atchafalaya Basin typically peaks in spring as rain and river flow move down the Mississippi and Red River systems. Rising water floods interior swamp roads and can limit access to some primitive basin areas, though levee-side private parks around Henderson stay open year-round. Summer brings high heat indices, daily thunderstorms, and heavy mosquito activity. Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, with peak activity in August and September; travelers should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories and plan flexible routes during that window. Fall is drier and cooler and often offers the best combination of weather and lighter crowds.

Henderson is a small town of roughly 1,600 residents built up along the levee. Interstate access is quick, but the roads leading to boat launches and swamp-side parks can be narrow, with sharp turns and low shoulders; drivers of longer coaches should scout routes on satellite view before committing. Cell coverage is generally good along I-10 and in town but weakens once inside the basin. Expect humidity, insects, and alligators near any water, and pack bug spray, sun protection, and rain gear regardless of season. Food is a highlight. Local institutions such as Pat's Fisherman's Wharf and Crawfish Town USA serve boiled crawfish in season, roughly January through June, plus year-round gumbo, boudin, and fried seafood.
