Campgrounds and RV parks near Jonesville, LA

Catahoula Lake and the Catahoula National Wildlife Refuge are the main draws. The refuge contains 25,162 acres divided into two units: the 6,671 acre Headquarters Unit bordering nine miles of the northeast shore of Catahoula Lake, and the 18,491 acre Bushley Bayou Unit about 8 miles west of Jonesville. A nine-mile wildlife drive around Little Lake near the refuge headquarters is the easiest way to see the area from an RV tow vehicle. Fishing is the other core activity. Local lakes and rivers hold crappie, largemouth bass, catfish, and bream, and several nearby parks include boat ramps or lake access. A state fish-consumption advisory applies to certain species on refuge waters, so review current guidance before keeping fish. Birders visit in winter for waterfowl. Peak waterfowl populations of 75,000 ducks have been recorded on the lake, which is recognized as a Wetlands of International Importance (RAMSAR site).

The region has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and mild-to-cool winters. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel, with daytime highs typically in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit and lower humidity than midsummer. These shoulder seasons also line up with productive fishing on Catahoula Lake and the surrounding river systems. Winter is the headline season for wildlife watching. Catahoula National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1958 as a wintering area for migratory waterfowl, and duck numbers on the lake peak from late fall through February. Special Recreational Activity Permits and lottery hunt applications can be obtained through the RecAccess website. Summer brings heat, high humidity, and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. August is typically the wettest month in the broader Natchez-Jonesville area. Backwater flooding from the Ouachita, Black, and Red Rivers can affect refuge access and low-lying roads, so verify current conditions before arrival.

Expect small-town infrastructure. Jonesville itself covers under two square miles, and services beyond fuel, groceries, and basic supplies are limited. Larger stores, medical care, and restaurant variety are easier to reach in Natchez, Mississippi or Alexandria, Louisiana. Parks in the area tend to be flat, grass-and-gravel setups with 30- and 50-amp service, water, and sewer at most sites. Pull-through sites, laundry, and showers are common at the private parks that cater to longer stays. Cell coverage is generally usable in town and thinner inside the refuge units. Bring insect repellent, especially from late spring through early fall. Wildlife on the refuge includes alligators, so keep children and pets away from bank edges and boat ramps at dusk.
