Killian camping overview
Killian is a small town in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, sitting on the Tickfaw River between Baton Rouge and the New Orleans Northshore. The surrounding area is classic South Louisiana bottomland: cypress swamps, slow rivers, and pine flats, with easy access from Interstate 55 and U.S. 190. RV travelers use Killian as a base for exploring the Tickfaw River corridor and the greater Livingston Parish outdoors, and the town is part of the Baton Rouge metropolitan area, putting groceries, fuel, and services within a short drive.
Campground options near Killian range from a full-service state park to riverfront RV parks and a working film-studio property that hosts overnight rigs. Tickfaw State Park anchors the area with improved sites, cabins, and boardwalk trails through the swamp. Private options along the Tickfaw and nearby waterways cater to boaters and anglers, while Holden-area properties add novelty stays. Most parks operate year round in a humid subtropical climate.
Things to do around Killian
The Tickfaw River is the main draw. Paddlers launch canoes and kayaks from Tickfaw State Park, which maintains over a mile of boardwalks through four ecosystems, a nature center with an 800-gallon native-fish aquarium, and a seasonal water playground. Anglers target largemouth bass, and alligator and turtle sightings are common under the cypress canopy. Powerboaters and jet-ski riders use ramps along the river and out toward Lake Maurepas.
Off the water, visitors tour John Schneider Studios in nearby Holden, a former camp turned film production complex with memorabilia and events. Day trips reach Baton Rouge in about 45 minutes and New Orleans in just over an hour, opening up museums, LSU sports, and French Quarter dining without giving up a quiet riverside campsite.

Killian sits in a humid subtropical zone with a long, hot camping season and mild winters. Spring, from March through May, is the most comfortable window for RV travel, with warm days, cool nights, and wildflowers along the Tickfaw. It is also the peak booking season at Tickfaw State Park, so reservations for holiday weekends fill quickly.
Summer runs hot and wet from June through August, with afternoon thunderstorms and heavy humidity. The state park water playground operates from April through September and draws family crowds. Fall brings relief in late September through November, cooler evenings, lower humidity, and the driest stretch of the year, making it a favorite among RVers who want to hike the boardwalks without swamp heat.
Winter, December through February, is mild but damp. Sites remain open year round, and the Tickfaw River can flood after prolonged rain, occasionally affecting low-lying riverfront properties. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November and is worth watching for evacuation planning.

This RV was exactly as described! We utilized the delivery and setup option! The communication with the owner was very prompt and timely! The camper was clean with a great snack basket for us! We also rented the golf cart and it was fantastic! We would definitely rent the camper again!

Excellent experience renting this camper. It was all set up ready to go when we arrived at our camp site and it was very spacious for my family. The outside kitchen with mini fridge and Blackstone grill was very convenient. I cooked breakfast on it both mornings. Thanks for a great experience at Brushy Creek Ranch!

How to book campgrounds near Killian
Tickfaw State Park reservations are handled by the Louisiana State Parks system through its ReserveAmerica portal or by phone. Sites and cabins can be booked well ahead, reservations must be made at least 48 hours in advance, and a maximum stay of 15 consecutive days applies. Holiday weekends and spring weekends sell out first, so booking several months out is advised.
Private parks near Killian, including Old River RV Park, Lakeside RV Resort, and Gator RV Park, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. John Schneider Studios books stays through its own site and through Harvest Hosts. Confirm rig-length limits, hookup type, and river-flood policies with the operator before arrival.
What to expect camping in Killian
Expect flat, wooded terrain, soft ground after rain, and abundant wildlife. Tickfaw State Park offers 30 improved sites with water and electric hookups, 20 primitive sites, a dump station, hot showers, laundry, a camp store, and a boat launch. Cell coverage is generally reliable near the interstate but can thin out along river bottoms.
Bugs are a real factor from spring through fall, so pack repellent and consider a screen room. Alligators live in park ponds and the river, and feeding them is prohibited by state law. Summer thunderstorms can be intense, and low-lying sites near the Tickfaw occasionally close after heavy rain. Levelling blocks help on grass and gravel pads at private parks.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Killian, LA
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Killian, LA?
Good news: RV rental in Killian is one of the more affordable ways to enjoy Louisiana's bayou country. Travel trailers typically run about $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes around $175 to $295, and larger Class A coaches $250 to $450 per night. Because Killian sits on the Tickfaw River in Livingston Parish (well outside Baton Rouge and New Orleans), you'll generally find better rates here than in big-city pickup spots. To score a cheap RV rental Killian travelers love, book midweek (Sunday through Thursday), aim for shoulder months like March or October, and use the price filter to sort listings from low to high.
louisianatravel.com/outdoor-nature/parks/state-parksDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Killian, LA?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Killian. Louisiana does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any RV-specific endorsement for personal motorhomes or travel trailers at standard recreational weights, so your everyday license works for any RV rental in Killian on the RVezy platform. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified during checkout. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). Most first-time renters are pleasantly surprised at how simple the paperwork really is.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Killian?
Every RV rental in Killian booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built in, so you are covered from the moment you drive away. The protection plan helps cover damage to the RV during your rental, giving you real financial peace of mind. You choose your coverage tier during checkout, not the host, so you can match the plan to your comfort level. Whether you are parked under the cypress trees along the Tickfaw River or rolling toward the Gulf Coast, you can focus on the trip instead of the what-ifs.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Killian RV rental?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy applies a clear, standardized cancellation policy to every reservation, including a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Hosts do not set their own cancellation terms, which keeps things simple and consistent across every RV rental in Killian and the rest of Louisiana. Refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel. You can review the full cancellation policy in the RVezy Help Center before you book, then reserve with peace of mind.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Killian, LA?
Absolutely, your pup is welcome on plenty of Killian trips. Filter for Pet-Friendly listings on RVezy and you'll see hosts who allow dogs (and sometimes cats) right in their house rules. Once you've found a pet-friendly RV rental Killian travelers recommend, message the host to share your dog's size and breed so you're both on the same page. Nearby Tickfaw State Park allows leashed pets on most trails and in campsites, and the boardwalks through the cypress-tupelo swamp are a hit with dogs who love new smells. Pro tip: bring a long lead so your dog can splash safely at the riverbank without wandering into gator territory.
lastateparks.com/parks-historic-sites/tickfaw-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Killian?
Yes, RV delivery Killian renters love is one of the easiest ways to start your trip stress-free. Many Livingston Parish hosts will drive the RV to your campsite, vacation rental, or even your driveway, then level it, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Popular delivery destinations include Tickfaw State Park (about 10 minutes away), Lake Lawn RV Resort in Springfield, and waterfront sites along the Tickfaw and Blood Rivers. To find delivery-ready listings, just toggle the Delivery filter on RVezy and enter your destination address. It's a perfect setup for first-timers who'd rather skip towing or driving a big rig.
lastateparks.com/parks-historic-sites/tickfaw-state-parkHow far can I travel on a Killian RV rental, and is unlimited mileage available?
You have real range from Killian. Many hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and several offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for a longer Louisiana RV trip. From Killian, you are about 45 minutes to Baton Rouge, 1 hour to New Orleans, 1.5 hours to Lafayette's Cajun Country, around 2.5 hours to the Gulf beaches at Grand Isle, and roughly 3 hours to Natchez, Mississippi. Each listing shows the included mileage and per-mile overage rate on the page, so map your route first, then choose the listing that matches. Pro tip: filter by unlimited mileage if you plan a multi-state loop.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Killian%2C%20LouisianaWhere are the best campgrounds near Killian, LA?
You're spoiled for choice. The standout is Tickfaw State Park in Springfield (about 10 minutes from Killian), with 50 improved sites, full hookups, and boardwalk trails through four distinct ecosystems. Lake Lawn RV Resort and Land-O-Pines Family Campground (Covington, about 35 minutes) both offer big-rig sites, pools, and family activities. For a more rustic Tickfaw River vibe, try Tickfaw Marina & RV Park right on the water in Springfield. Reserve Tickfaw State Park through the official Louisiana State Parks reservation system up to 13 months in advance, especially for spring weekends and crawfish-season holidays. Pro tip: sites in the 30s loop at Tickfaw State Park back up to the swamp boardwalk, which is the quietest part of the park.
lastateparks.com/parks-historic-sites/tickfaw-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Killian, LA?
The sweet spot is mid-October through late April, when Killian's humidity drops and daytime temps sit in a glorious 60°F to 78°F range. February through April is prime crawfish-boil and festival season, with Mardi Gras parades in nearby Hammond and Ponchatoula's famous Strawberry Festival in April. Fall (October to early December) brings cooler nights in the 50s, fewer mosquitoes, and beautiful cypress color along the Tickfaw River. Summer (June to September) is hot and muggy (mid-90s with high humidity) and is also peak hurricane season, so most savvy renters avoid it or stick to short, AC-heavy trips. Book your shoulder-season dates early, they're the smartest money in Louisiana.
weather.gov/lix/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Killian?
You'll do great, and you won't be left to figure it out alone. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering driving, leveling, hookups, generator, slide-outs, and waste tanks, so by the time you pull away you've already practiced the basics. Killian itself is small-town Louisiana with quiet two-lane roads (LA-22 and LA-444 are the main routes) and easy access to I-12 about 15 minutes north, perfect for getting comfortable before bigger drives. First time renting an RV? Consider a campervan or smaller Class C for easier handling, or just book a host who offers delivery and skip the driving entirely on day one. You've got this.
fmcsa.dot.gov/safety/driver-safety/driving-safelyWhat if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
Help is always one call away. Every booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the RVezy protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and mechanical breakdowns anywhere in Louisiana or beyond. If something feels off, your first call is the roadside assistance line. For questions about the RV's quirks (where is the inverter switch, how do I extend the awning), message your host directly through the RVezy app. RVezy customer support is also on standby before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: snap a photo of the host's walkthrough notes at pickup so key switches and tank locations are saved on your phone.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat are the best RV road trips from Killian, LA?
Killian's central location makes it a fantastic launchpad for an RV road trip into the heart of the Gulf South. Top routes include New Orleans and the French Quarter (about 1 hour southeast), the Atchafalaya Basin and Lafayette's Cajun Country (1.5 hours west), the Gulf Coast beaches at Gulf Shores, Alabama (about 3.5 hours east), the Natchez Trace Parkway through Mississippi (starts about 2 hours north), and the Mississippi Gulf Coast in Biloxi (about 1.5 hours east). Cross-state trips are simple. Cross-border travel into Canada or Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals, so plan US-only routes. Confirm long routes with your host so mileage and dates line up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a motorhome rental Killian trip?
Fuel is very manageable here. Louisiana consistently has some of the lowest gas prices in the country (often $0.30 to $0.50 below the national average), which is great news for your motorhome rental Killian budget. Plan on roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon for a Class C, 6 to 8 MPG for a Class A, and 12 to 18 MPG for a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer. Campervans often hit 18 to 22 MPG. For a 3-night, 300-mile loop through Killian, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans, budget around $90 to $140 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up at the Pilot or Love's near I-12 Exit 32 in Albany before heading toward New Orleans, where prices jump.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Killian?
Earlier is better, but you've got more flexibility than you might think. Tickfaw State Park accepts reservations up to 13 months out through the official Louisiana State Parks system, and weekend sites from March through May (crawfish and festival season) regularly book 4 to 6 months ahead. For summer and fall weekdays, 2 to 4 weeks of lead time is usually enough. Private parks like Lake Lawn RV Resort and Land-O-Pines fill fastest during Mardi Gras, Jazz Fest (late April/early May), and New Orleans football weekends, so target those 3+ months out. Pro tip: if a site shows booked, check back 7 days before your dates, cancellations are very common in Louisiana.
lastateparks.com/reservationsWhat are local driving conditions like around Killian, LA?
Driving around Killian is refreshingly easy: quiet rural roads, light traffic, and flat terrain with no mountain grades to worry about. The main local routes are LA-22, LA-444, and LA-1037, all comfortable for any RV. I-12 (15 minutes north) is your fast east-west connector to Baton Rouge and New Orleans. A few Louisiana-specific tips: keep an eye out for slow-moving farm equipment on parish roads, watch for sudden afternoon thunderstorms (especially May to September), and never park on soft grass shoulders, the soil is sandy and tires sink quickly. Bridges over the Tickfaw and Amite rivers are RV-friendly with full clearance. Pro tip: avoid I-10 through Baton Rouge between 4 and 6 p.m., it's the slowest stretch in the state.
511la.org/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Killian?
Most campgrounds in the Killian area are well-equipped for comfortable RV camping Killian visitors enjoy. Tickfaw State Park offers 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer or central dump station, hot showers, a visitor center, and Wi-Fi at the office. Lake Lawn RV Resort and Land-O-Pines add pools, laundry, playgrounds, and pull-through full-hookup sites suitable for big rigs. Free potable water fills are available at Tickfaw State Park's dump station, and the Pilot Travel Center at I-12 Exit 32 also has an RV dump for a small fee. Cell service from AT&T and Verizon is solid throughout Livingston Parish. Pro tip: pack a 25-foot sewer hose, some pedestals at older Louisiana parks sit further from sites than you'd expect.
lastateparks.com/parks-historic-sites/tickfaw-state-parkWhat features and amenities come standard in a Killian RV rental?
Today's rentals are basically apartments on wheels. Most Killian RVs come with a real queen or king bed, a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, microwave, stove, often an oven), a wet or dry bath with hot shower, roof air conditioning (critical for Louisiana summers), heating, a dinette, and seatbelts for every traveler. Many also include flat-screen TVs, Bluetooth stereos, outdoor speakers, and onboard generators for off-grid power. Wi-Fi varies, some hosts provide a hotspot, while others rely on your phone's data. Check the amenities section of each listing to confirm what's onboard. Pro tip: in Killian's humid climate, prioritize listings that mention dual AC units or a 13,500+ BTU rooftop unit, you'll thank yourself in July.
energy.gov/energysaver/air-conditioningWhat add-ons and options can I get with my RV rental in Killian, LA?
Hosts in Killian love making your trip turnkey. Common add-ons include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits with pots, plates, and utensils ($25 to $50), camping chairs and outdoor rugs, propane refills, generator hours, bike racks, and Starlink or hotspot Wi-Fi. Many also offer delivery and setup (often $1 to $3 per mile or a flat fee within Livingston Parish) and pickup/return at Tickfaw State Park or your home address. Mileage policies vary by listing, with included miles, per-mile overages, or unlimited options all available. Pro tip: bundle linens, kitchen, and delivery into one host package, it's almost always cheaper than booking each add-on à la carte, and your campervan rental Killian experience starts the moment they hand you the keys.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulationsHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card at the time of booking, with no cash or off-platform transfers, which keeps your protection plan and roadside assistance fully active. Your host sets a refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 for Killian-area rentals) that is held separately from the booking payment around the time of pickup and released after return, assuming the RV comes back in the agreed condition. To avoid surprises, take date-stamped photos at pickup and dropoff, follow the fuel and dump instructions on your trip sheet, and message your host through RVezy with any questions.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs family RV camping near Killian a good option for kids?
It's one of the best family adventures in south Louisiana. A family RV trip Killian families rave about usually centers on Tickfaw State Park, where kids love the elevated boardwalks through the cypress swamp, the nature center's live reptile exhibits, and the splash pad in summer. Land-O-Pines in Covington has water slides, a fishing pond, and mini-golf, perfect for younger kids. The Global Wildlife Center in Folsom (25 minutes away) lets families feed giraffes and zebras from a safari wagon. Most family-sized rentals on RVezy sleep 6 to 8, with bunk beds and convertible dinettes for easy setup. Pro tip: book a site with a concrete pad at Tickfaw, it keeps muddy little feet out of the RV after swamp hikes.
