Campgrounds and RV parks near Killona, LA

The River Road between Killona and New Orleans is lined with antebellum plantation sites, including Whitney, Evergreen, and Oak Alley, all within a short drive. The Mississippi River levee is open to walking and cycling, and swamp tour operators run daily boat trips out of nearby Des Allemands and Lafitte. At Bayou Segnette State Park, boating, fishing, camping, canoeing, hiking, picnicking and playgrounds are available, and both salt and freshwater fishing are possible because of the park's unique location. The park also has a playground, picnic area, wave pool, marina and boat launch, and a nature center with educational displays of the wildlife located in the park. New Orleans itself, with the French Quarter, City Park, and the National WWII Museum, is roughly a 30 to 40 minute drive east on US-90 or I-310.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV camping around Killona. Daytime highs sit in the 70s and low 80s, humidity is manageable, and mosquito pressure is lower than in summer. Spring also overlaps with Jazz Fest and French Quarter Fest in New Orleans, which pushes area campgrounds toward capacity. Summer is hot, humid, and stormy. New Orleans experiences a humid subtropical climate with hot, wet summers that often bring heavy seasonal downpours or afternoon thunderstorms. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with peak Gulf activity from August into October, so travelers should track forecasts and know evacuation routes. Winter is mild and one of the busiest seasons for snowbirds. Freezes happen but are brief. Mardi Gras, which falls in February or early March, drives strong demand across all campgrounds within an hour of New Orleans, and reservations should be locked in months ahead.

The terrain around Killona is flat, low, and close to sea level. Sites at nearby private parks are typically level concrete or gravel pads, and larger rigs are generally well accommodated. The overnight accommodations at Bayou Segnette State Park include 98 campsites with water and electrical hook-ups and a nearby comfort station and tent camping, with no sewer connection provided, but a dump station on the premises. Expect mosquitoes, biting flies, and love bugs in warmer months, and bring repellent. Alligators are present in the bayous and canals; keep pets leashed and away from the water's edge. Cell phones often do not work in remote areas including many park sites. Roads in the area include narrow River Road sections and levee crossings. Check bridge and route restrictions if driving a tall or long rig, and fuel up before leaving the interstate corridor.
