Campgrounds and RV parks near Kraemer, LA

Swamp and airboat tours out of Kraemer and neighboring Des Allemands are the headline activity, with alligator sightings common from spring through fall. Fishing for bass, bream, catfish, and speckled trout is productive along Bayou Boeuf and nearby waterways. The Barataria Preserve, part of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve, protects more than 26,000 acres of Louisiana wetlands with boardwalks, dirt trails, picnic areas, fishing, and wildlife viewing. Ranger programs and canoe treks run on a published schedule, and the boardwalk trails are stroller-friendly. Day drives reach the plantations along the River Road, downtown Thibodaux, and the Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center in Thibodaux, another Jean Lafitte unit. New Orleans and the French Quarter sit roughly an hour east via US-90.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in south Louisiana. From March through May and again from October into early December, daytime temperatures are mild, humidity eases, and rain events tend to be shorter. These shoulder seasons line up with crawfish season in spring and festival season in fall, so parks near Thibodaux and Houma can fill on weekends. Summer is hot, humid, and wet, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. It is also hurricane season, which officially runs June 1 through November 30, with tropical systems most often threatening the Louisiana coast from August into October. The area has no true dry season, and precipitation is spread across all months, peaking in August. RV travelers should monitor NOAA and National Hurricane Center advisories and be prepared to reroute. Winters are short and generally mild, with occasional cold fronts and morning fog along the bayous. Many parks stay open year-round, and January and February are the quietest months for sites and amenities.

Roads into Kraemer are two-lane parish highways with narrow shoulders and occasional low spots after heavy rain. Larger rigs should plan routes via LA-20 and US-90 rather than smaller bayou roads. Watch for slow-moving farm and oilfield traffic. Expect mosquitoes and biting flies from late spring through fall, especially near swamp trailheads. Bring repellent, long sleeves for dusk, and screens in good repair. Alligators are common in the bayous; keep pets leashed and away from the water. Most nearby RV parks offer full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, but shade, site length, and Wi-Fi vary widely. Confirm big-rig access, pull-through availability, and any weight limits with the park before arrival, particularly at older properties on soft ground.
