Campgrounds near Mathews, Louisiana
Mathews sits in Lafourche Parish along Bayou Lafourche, about halfway between Thibodaux and Raceland in the heart of Louisiana's Cajun Bayou country. The community is centered on the bayou, a former course of the Mississippi River that curves southward for over a hundred miles before reaching the Gulf of Mexico. RV renters use Mathews as a base to explore swamps, wetlands, Cajun cuisine, and coastal fishing without staying inside a larger city.
RV parks in the immediate area lean toward small, long-stay-friendly sites along LA-1 and US-90. Capri Court Motorhome Park and South Houma RV Park are the closest options for full-hookup stays, with Bayou Black RV Park sitting west toward the swamp-tour launches near Gibson. Laplace Trailer- RV Park lies to the northeast along the I-10 corridor, and Poche Plantation RV Resort Cottage is further north along the Mississippi River plantation route.
Expect flat terrain, working waterfront neighborhoods, and easy access to seafood markets, boat launches, and guided bayou tours.
Things to do near Mathews
Swamp and airboat tours are the signature activity. Operators in Gibson, Houma, Thibodaux, and Kraemer run narrated trips through cypress swamps and marshes where alligators, wading birds, and nutria are commonly spotted. Bayou Black Airboat Swamp Tours and Zam's Swamp Tours are two long-running options within a short drive of Mathews.
Charter fishing runs year-round, with speckled trout and redfish targeted inshore and offshore trips launching from Cocodrie and Grand Isle. History-oriented stops include the Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center in Thibodaux, Laurel Valley Village sugar plantation, and the E.D. White Historic Site.
Families often pair a swamp tour with a Cajun meal in Thibodaux or Houma and a stop at the Bayou Terrebonne Waterlife Museum. Grand Isle State Park, about two hours south down LA-1, offers Gulf beach access, a fishing pier, and birding along the barrier island.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in this part of Louisiana. Temperatures sit in the 70s and low 80s Fahrenheit, humidity is lower than in summer, and migratory birds pass through the coastal wetlands. April brings the Grand Isle Migratory Bird Festival, and Lafourche Parish festivals cluster in cooler months.
Summer is hot, humid, and wet. August is typically the wettest month, and afternoon thunderstorms are near-daily. It is also inside the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June 1 through November 30, with peak activity historically from mid-August through October. RV renters traveling in this window should track NOAA and National Hurricane Center advisories and have an evacuation plan; coastal parishes are particularly exposed to storm surge.
Winter is mild, with occasional cold fronts and morning fog along the bayou. Rain still falls regularly, but crowds thin and campground availability improves outside of Mardi Gras weekends.
How to book campgrounds near Mathews
Private RV parks around Mathews, Houma, and Thibodaux, including Capri Court Motorhome Park, South Houma RV Park, Bayou Black RV Park, Laplace Trailer- RV Park, and Poche Plantation RV Resort Cottage, are generally reserved directly with the park by phone or through their websites. Many cater to monthly stays tied to oilfield and marine work, so calling ahead is important for shorter RV-rental trips.
For state park camping, Louisiana State Parks uses a central reservation system through the Go Outdoors Louisiana portal. Grand Isle State Park, the closest state park with RV sites, accepts reservations up to 13 months in advance and requires bookings at least 48 hours before arrival. A two-night minimum applies for weekend stays, and cancellation fees increase inside 15 days of arrival.
What to expect on the ground
The landscape around Mathews is flat, low-lying, and dominated by water. Bayou Lafourche runs directly through town, and side roads lead to boat launches, shrimp docks, and sugar cane fields. Expect narrow shoulders on LA-1 and LA-308, working truck traffic, and drawbridges that occasionally hold up travel.
Mosquitoes and biting flies are a serious factor from spring through fall; bring repellent, screens, and long sleeves for evening cookouts. Cell coverage is generally reliable along the highway corridors but can drop out on remote swamp roads and in the marsh south of Golden Meadow.
Groceries, fuel, and RV supplies are easiest to find in Houma, Thibodaux, and Raceland. Local seafood markets sell fresh shrimp, crabs, and crawfish in season, and Cajun and Creole restaurants are common in every town along the bayou.
