Campgrounds and RV parks near Milton, LA

The Vermilion River threads through the area and supports fishing, kayaking, and boat launches at multiple public access points. Palmetto Island State Park sits on the Vermilion River and offers a boat launch for fishing and boating, while interior lagoons and a canoe trail give paddlers a close look at native plants and wildlife. Cultural stops cluster in Lafayette. Vermilionville is a living history museum covering Acadian, Native American, and Creole cultures with restored homes and costumed interpreters, and the Jean Lafitte Acadian Cultural Center covers similar ground. Lake Martin near Breaux Bridge is known for birdwatching and swamp tours, and Avery Island is home to the Tabasco factory along with the Jungle Gardens. Airboat and swamp tours also run out of Henderson on the edge of the Atchafalaya Basin.

South Louisiana has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and long, hot summers. Winter in the Lafayette area is relatively mild, with January highs averaging in the low 60s Fahrenheit and overnight lows in the mid 40s. This makes late fall through early spring the most comfortable stretch for RV travel, and it lines up with festival season across Acadiana. Spring brings warm days and active thunderstorms. Reservations tighten around Mardi Gras in Lafayette and around Festival International de Louisiane in late April. Late February through April and October through November tend to offer the most agreeable weather, with milder temperatures, lower humidity, and less oppressive heat. Summer is hot and humid, with heavy afternoon storms and elevated hurricane risk from June through November. June through August represents the peak of the subtropical climate, with average highs near 90°F and overnight lows staying in the low to mid 70s. Insect pressure is significant in warmer months, particularly near the wetlands south of Milton.

Terrain around Milton is flat and low, with elevations barely above sea level and drainage into the Vermilion River. Expect gravel or concrete pads at most improved parks, mature oaks for partial shade, and mosquitoes and biting flies whenever temperatures climb. Bug spray is worth packing, as the surrounding wetlands make insects a reliable presence, particularly in warmer months. Hookups are generally full at private parks in the area, and state-park sites at Palmetto Island offer improved amenities. Sites at Palmetto Island are wide, gravel-surfaced, and level, with full hookups across the board including electric, water, and sewer. The area is susceptible to flooding, and hurricanes are a recurring hazard along the Gulf Coast, so RVers travelling in late summer and early fall should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories and be ready to reroute.
