Campgrounds and RV parks near Pierre Part, LA

Water defines the trip. Lake Verret, Grassy Lake, and Belle River hold bass, crappie, and catfish, with public boat launches in and around town. The Atchafalaya Basin itself offers hundreds of miles of bayous to explore by flat-bottom boat, kayak, or guided swamp tour departing from Pierre Part, Belle River, and Morgan City. On land, families can visit the Wedell-Williams Aviation and Cypress Sawmill Museum in Patterson, ride levee-top routes overlooking the basin, or drive about 30 miles north to the Donaldsonville Historic District. Birders should look for wading species along Bayou Teche and in nearby national wildlife refuges. Cajun food is a core draw: boudin, gumbo, crawfish etouffee, and boiled crawfish are widely available in local restaurants.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in the Pierre Part area. March through May brings warm days, wildflowers, and peak crawfish season, with basin water levels running high from winter and spring rain and Mississippi River backwater. This is a strong window for fishing and swamp tours, though thunderstorms are common. Summer runs hot and humid, with daytime highs near 90°F and heat indices frequently well over 100°F. July and August are the wettest months, and Atlantic hurricane season peaks from August through October, occasionally forcing evacuations and park closures along the coast and lower basin. Bugs, especially mosquitoes, are heavy. Winter is mild and generally the driest stretch, with cool nights and lows into the mid-40s possible. Many campgrounds stay open year-round, and snowbirds book monthly sites at parks like Kemper Williams Park St Mary Parish Park and Cypress Lake RV Resort. Basin water levels typically drop from summer into fall.

The terrain is flat and low, often just a few feet above sea level, with narrow parish roads, levee routes, and frequent bridges over bayous. Most established RV parks offer full hookups with 30/50-amp service, dump stations, and shaded pull-through or back-in sites suited to big rigs. Kemper Williams Park St Mary Parish Park has a mix of full-hookup and water-and-electric sites on a 300-acre property off US 90 in Patterson. Cell coverage is generally solid on major carriers along US 90 and LA 70 but can drop in the deeper swamp. Bring insect repellent year-round, plan for humidity, and pack rain gear even in drier months. Wildlife is part of the experience: alligators, herons, egrets, and the occasional black bear in refuge areas. Follow posted rules at boat launches and keep pets leashed and food secured at camp.
