Camping near Port Vincent, Louisiana
Port Vincent is a village in Livingston Parish, Louisiana, and part of the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Statistical Area. It sits on the Amite River about 30 minutes east of Baton Rouge and roughly 90 minutes northwest of New Orleans. The area draws RV travelers looking for river access, bass and bream fishing, and a quiet base within reach of two major Louisiana cities. Terrain is flat and low-lying, wooded with oak and pine, and shaped by bayous feeding into Lake Maurepas.
Most campgrounds nearby are privately owned RV parks rather than public lands. Gator RV Park and Old River RV Park serve travelers who want full hookups close to the river, while Lakeside RV Resort is a larger destination park off Interstate 12. Baton Rouge KOA Holiday sits west toward the capital, and Lamar Dixon Expo Center RV Park in Gonzales fills up around events at the fairgrounds.
Expect humid subtropical conditions, mosquito pressure in the warm months, and a booking rhythm driven more by LSU football weekends, festivals, and expo events than by a traditional summer camping season.
Things to do around Port Vincent
Fishing and boating anchor most trips. The Amite River flows to Lake Maurepas, and its lower 37 miles are navigable, supporting largemouth bass, catfish, and sac-a-lait, with boat launches and river frontage near several parks in the area.
Day trips fan out in three directions. Baton Rouge is close for LSU athletics, the State Capitol, and the USS Kidd. Gonzales, known as the Jambalaya Capital of the World, hosts the annual Jambalaya Festival and events at Lamar Dixon Expo Center. New Orleans is reachable in about 90 minutes for the French Quarter and Garden District.
Closer in, families can paddle bayous, tour swamp preserves near Maurepas, or spend an afternoon at Global Wildlife Center in Folsom. Golf, casinos, and Cajun and Creole restaurants round out the options.

December - February

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. March through May brings mild days, wildflowers, and the crawfish season, with afternoon thunderstorms building as spring progresses. October and November cool off, humidity drops, and biting insects ease, making these among the best months for extended stays.
Baton Rouge experiences a humid subtropical climate, with hot summers and heavy seasonal downpours or afternoon thunderstorms during the warmer months. Sites with shade and 50-amp service for full AC use are worth prioritizing in summer. Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with peak activity from mid-August through October, and area parks occasionally close or reshuffle bookings ahead of named storms.
Winter is mild by North American standards but wet. Hard freezes are brief, though water hookups can freeze on cold nights. Demand spikes on LSU home football weekends in the fall, around Mardi Gras in late winter, and during the Jambalaya Festival and Lamar Dixon events; booking well ahead is essential during those windows.

Excellent experience renting this camper. It was all set up ready to go when we arrived at our camp site and it was very spacious for my family. The outside kitchen with mini fridge and Blackstone grill was very convenient. I cooked breakfast on it both mornings. Thanks for a great experience at Brushy Creek Ranch!

How to book campgrounds near Port Vincent
Most parks in the Port Vincent area are privately operated and book directly through their own websites or by phone. Gator RV Park, Old River RV Park, Lakeside RV Resort, Baton Rouge KOA Holiday, and Lamar Dixon Expo Center RV Park all take reservations independently rather than through a federal system like Recreation.gov.
Book two to three months out for standard weekends, and considerably earlier for LSU home football, Mardi Gras, festival dates, and horse shows or expos at Lamar Dixon. Waterfront and premium pull-through sites sell out first. Confirm rig-length limits, big-rig turning access, and 50-amp availability at booking, since older parks along the river can have tighter interior roads and lower branches.
For state parks a bit farther out, Louisiana State Parks uses its own online reservation system with a rolling booking window.
What to expect on the ground
Parks in this corner of Louisiana skew utilitarian: gravel or concrete pads, full hookups, laundry, and a small store are typical, with pools and organized amenities more common at the larger resorts. Cell service is generally reliable across Livingston and Ascension parishes; over-the-air TV and satellite reception vary under heavy tree cover.
Bring insect repellent, screened outdoor gear, and a plan for humidity: dehumidifiers and vent fans make a real difference. Wildlife includes alligators in the bayous and rivers, so keep pets leashed near water and do not feed anything.
Roads into riverside parks can be narrow, and low-lying access routes occasionally flood after heavy rain. Check current conditions with the park before arrival during wet stretches, and confirm any weight or length restrictions on secondary roads if traveling in a larger Class A or fifth wheel.

A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before the trip, not charged unless there's damage or extra cleaning needed. After a successful return, the hold is released, usually within a few business days. Avoid issues by taking date-stamped photos at pickup and return, returning with a clean interior and empty tanks (or paying the dump fee), and refueling to the level shown at pickup. Pro tip: do a quick walkaround with the host on camera so everyone agrees on the starting condition.
