Campgrounds and RV parks near Sorrel, LA

Water activities anchor most trips. A boat launch near the park office at Lake Fausse Pointe State Park gives visitors access to the waterways that wind through the Basin, and rental boats, canoes, and kayaks are available on site. A network of raised boardwalks and a canoe trail offer close views of the wetland ecosystem, and largemouth bass fishing is productive in the surrounding waters. Cultural stops are close by. St. Martinville and the Longfellow-Evangeline State Historic Site sit within an easy drive, and Avery Island's Tabasco factory and Jungle Gardens, downtown New Iberia along Bayou Teche, and the Chitimacha Cultural Center in Charenton round out the area for families.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. March through May brings mild temperatures and the region's driest stretch, with March averaging the fewest rainy days of the year. October and November bring cooler nights, lower humidity, and reduced mosquito pressure, and are widely considered the most pleasant months to visit south Louisiana parks. Summer runs hot and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. August is typically the wettest month, and mosquitoes peak from June through September. The Atlantic hurricane season peaks in August and September, and coastal sites such as Burns Point are more exposed to storm impacts and closures. Winter is mild by northern standards, with occasional cold snaps and January lows near 45°F. Crawfish season peaks from late winter through spring, and Mardi Gras parades in New Iberia, Franklin, and surrounding communities draw crowds in February. High water on the Atchafalaya can affect boat ramps and low-lying campsites after heavy winter rain.

Terrain is flat, low, and wet. Expect swamp, sugarcane fields, and bayou frontage rather than woodlands or hills. Insect repellent is essential from spring through fall, and biting flies and mosquitoes can be heavy near standing water. Road access to some sites requires attention. GPS routing through Baldwin or Charenton will direct drivers to a gravel road; use the Boutte LaRose exit off I-10, since RV travel trailers cannot cross the pontoon bridge into Lake Fausse Pointe. The park can accommodate RVs and trailers up to 90 feet long. Cell coverage is uneven in the Basin. Lake Fausse Pointe State Park offers a remote experience with limited cell phone service. Download maps before arrival and expect to unplug at the more isolated sites.
