Campgrounds and RV parks near Sorrento, LA

The Cajun Village is the closest attraction to most Sorrento campgrounds. It is a collection of restored buildings dating from the 1800s, moved to the present site to form a historically accurate Acadian village, and its two resident alligators are named Big Boy and Nubby. Families with kids usually make it a first stop. River Road plantations are within a short drive, and Donaldsonville offers a historic walking tour of its downtown district. Pelican Point Golf Club in Gonzales adds an 18-hole option for golfers. For outdoor recreation, Tickfaw State Park is roughly an hour east. Visitors can bring a canoe or kayak on the Tickfaw River, and the Water Playground offers refreshing fun for those not quite adventurous enough to explore the swamps and sloughs. Boardwalks wind through cypress-tupelo swamp, bottomland hardwood forest, and mixed pine-hardwood forest habitats along the Tickfaw River.

South Louisiana camping runs year-round, but comfort varies sharply by season. The most comfortable months for RV travel are mid-February through April and October into November, when daily highs sit roughly between the upper 60s and mid 80s Fahrenheit with lower humidity. Spring wildflowers and festival season align with these windows. Summer is hot and wet. July sees the highest average temperatures, reaching about 91 degrees Fahrenheit at the peak and 74 in the low, with an average heat index in July around a life-threatening 116 degrees. Afternoon thunderstorms are near daily, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, so travelers should watch tropical forecasts closely in late summer and early fall. Winter is short and generally mild. January is the coldest month, generally recording average temperatures ranging from a high near 59 degrees to a low around 43 degrees Fahrenheit. Cold snaps are brief, and most private RV parks stay open all winter. Mosquitoes peak June through September, especially at dawn and dusk, while October through March offers the most comfortable conditions with minimal insects.

Terrain around Sorrento is flat, low, and often damp. Sites at private parks are typically level gravel or grass with full hookups, and larger rigs generally have no trouble maneuvering. Expect mosquitoes and other biting insects from late spring through early fall; bring repellent and consider a screen room. Cell coverage is solid along the I-10 corridor and in town, but drops in outlying swamp areas. Grocery, fuel, propane, and RV supplies are easy to find in Gonzales and along Airline Highway. Alligators are common in local waterways; keep pets leashed near canals, ponds, and boat launches. At nearby Tickfaw State Park, amenities include rental cabins, primitive and RV campsites, raised boardwalks, a nature center, water playground, kayak and boat launches, and equipment rentals, giving a sense of what wilder camping near Sorrento looks like: shady, humid, and full of wildlife.
