Campgrounds and RV parks near St. James, LA

River Road plantation tours are the headline activity. Oak Alley Plantation in Vacherie, with its quarter-mile canopy of oaks, is the most photographed home on the river and a top attraction in the parish. Laura Plantation and Whitney Plantation are also within a short drive, with Whitney focused on the history of slavery. The St. James Parish Welcome Center in Gramercy has interpretive exhibits on local culture, and St. Michael's Catholic Church in Convent is notable for its Lourdes Grotto built from bagasse, a byproduct of sugarcane. Cajun and Creole restaurants line River Road, and New Orleans and Baton Rouge are each roughly an hour away for aquarium visits, French Quarter walks, and LSU games.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in south Louisiana. March through May brings mild temperatures, blooming azaleas, and lower humidity, and it lines up with Jazz Fest and French Quarter Fest in nearby New Orleans. October and November tend to be drier than the summer months and better suited to walking plantation grounds without midday heat. Summer, June through August, is hot, humid, and stormy. Afternoon thunderstorms are routine, and the Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with peak activity from mid-August through October. RV renters traveling in this window should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories and build flexibility into routing. Winter is mild by North American standards, with daytime highs typically in the 60s Fahrenheit and only rare hard freezes. December is notable locally for the Christmas Eve Bonfires on the levee, a tradition in southern Louisiana, especially in St. James Parish, with main events in Gramercy, Lutcher, and Paulina, and over 100 bonfires.

St. James Parish is rural and industrial in character, with sugarcane fields, chemical plants, and small river towns along Highway 44 and Highway 18. Cell coverage is generally solid, and I-10 provides fast access to both Baton Rouge and New Orleans. River Road itself is narrow in places and shares space with levee traffic, so plan tight turns carefully in longer rigs. Parks in this area lean toward full-hookup, pull-through sites with 30 and 50 amp service, concrete or gravel pads, and shade from mature oaks and pecans. Mosquitoes and humidity are constants from late spring through early fall, so screens, repellent, and functioning AC matter. Alligators live in local waterways, so keep pets leashed near ponds and bayous.
