Waterproof camping overview
Waterproof sits on the west bank of the Mississippi River in Tensas Parish, in a sparsely populated stretch of northeast Louisiana between Vidalia and Newellton. The town takes its name from a history of surviving river floods, and the surrounding landscape is defined by the levee, oxbow lakes, cotton fields, and cypress sloughs of the lower Mississippi Delta. RV travelers use the area as a quiet base for fishing, birding, and history-focused day trips across the river into Mississippi.
Campground options fall into two groups. On the Louisiana side, Lake Bruin State Park sits in Tensas Parish on an adjacent oxbow lake, and River View RV Park And Resort and Plantation RV Park serve the Vidalia and Ferriday corridor along US 65 and US 84. Across the river in Mississippi, Campground A - Natchez State Park and Grand Gulf Military Monument Park north of Port Gibson add state-park and historic-site options within an easy drive.
Expect flat terrain, humid air, and long sight lines. Cell coverage is spotty at the state parks and steadier at the river-adjacent commercial parks.
Things to do near Waterproof
Water recreation drives most trips. Lake Bruin has over 3,000 acres of water surface, three large fishing piers, a year-round boat launch, and rental boats, with largemouth bass fishing popular all year and best in April, May, June, September, and October. Families use the on-site water playground and swimming area during warmer months.
History anchors the Mississippi side. Natchez, about ten miles from Natchez State Park, is the oldest settlement on the Mississippi River, and before the Civil War over half of the millionaires in the United States lived there and built elegant mansions. Grand Gulf Military Monument Park, northwest of Port Gibson, is a 450-acre National Register site with Fort Cobun, Fort Wade, a museum, hiking trails, and an observation tower.
Disc golf, nature trails, and lake fishing at Natchez State Park round out a multi-day itinerary.
