Campgrounds and RV parks near White Castle, LA

River Road itself is a scenic drive lined with sugarcane fields, historic sites, and levee-top viewpoints of passing barge traffic on the Mississippi. Note that the Nottoway mansion just north of town was destroyed by fire in 2025, so travellers should confirm what remains open on the grounds before planning a visit. Day trips are the main draw. Baton Rouge offers the State Capitol, LSU campus tours, and the USS Kidd, a World War II destroyer museum moored on the river. Heading east on I-10, Gonzales bills itself as the Jambalaya Capital and hosts events at the Lamar Dixon Expo Center, including rodeos, horse shows, and RV rallies. Swamp tours run from nearby Sorrento and Gramercy, and fishing is productive along the Atchafalaya Basin to the west.

South Louisiana runs on a humid subtropical schedule. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with daytime highs in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit and lower humidity than summer. Wildflowers and azaleas peak in March and April, and many local festivals cluster in these shoulder months. Summer is hot and wet. Afternoon thunderstorms are near-daily, heat indexes routinely exceed 100°F, and mosquitoes are heavy near the levee and any standing water. Full hookups with reliable 50-amp service become essential for running air conditioning. Atlantic hurricane season officially runs June 1 through November 30, with peak activity in August and September, so travellers should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories and confirm evacuation policies with each park. Winters are short and mild but damp. Hard freezes are uncommon but do occur, and most private RV parks in the area stay open year-round. Cold fronts bring the driest, clearest stretches of the year, making late December through February a quiet but pleasant time for extended stays.

Sites in the White Castle area are generally level, grassy or gravel pads with full hookups. Cell service is reliable on major carriers throughout Iberville and Ascension parishes, and grocery, fuel, and propane are easy to find in Plaquemine, Donaldsonville, and Gonzales. Bring bug spray, a surge protector, and sewer supports rated for soft ground. Levee roads are narrow in spots, and low-hanging live oaks along River Road can catch tall rigs, so plan routes on Highway 1 and I-10 where possible. Wildlife is part of the experience. Alligators live in nearby bayous, fire ants are common in grassy sites, and love bugs swarm in spring and fall. Pets should be leashed and monitored, especially near water.
