Campgrounds near Dover-Foxcroft
Dover-Foxcroft sits in Piscataquis County in central Maine, on the doorstep of the Moosehead Lake region and the state's North Woods. It is a practical base for RV travelers heading toward Sebec Lake, Moosehead Lake, and Baxter State Park, with a small downtown that covers groceries, propane, and fuel.
The closest full-service campground is Peaks-Kenny State Park, a 56-site state park campground on the South Cove of Sebec Lake. Roughly 12 miles west by road, Spacious Skies Balsam Woods in Abbot offers full-hookup RV sites, cabins, and direct access to Maine's ATV trail network. Moosehead Trail Campground and Stetson Shores Campground extend the options southward toward Newport and Stetson.
Sites here are generally wooded and set among tall pines and glacial boulders, with lake access at the state park and at several private grounds. Most facilities operate on a seasonal schedule tied to the short interior-Maine summer, so trip dates should be checked against each campground's opening and closing window before booking an RV rental.
Things to do around Dover-Foxcroft
Sebec Lake is the main draw. Peaks-Kenny State Park has a sand beach with a lifeguarded swim area in summer, canoe and kayak rentals, and roughly 10 miles of hiking trails, including gentle loops from the day-use area. The lake holds landlocked salmon, lake trout, and smallmouth bass, so bring rods and a Maine fishing license for anyone age 16 and up.
Beyond the state park, Spacious Skies Balsam Woods sits on a trail network that connects to roughly 1,000 miles of designated ATV trails, with rides reaching Greenville on Moosehead Lake, Jackman, The Forks, Rockwood, and Bingham. Day trips run north to Moosehead Lake and Mount Kineo, west to Borestone Mountain, and east toward Katahdin Iron Works and Baxter State Park.

The camping season in interior Maine is short. Peaks-Kenny State Park is open and staffed from May 15 to October 1, and Spacious Skies Balsam Woods operates roughly May through October. Outside those windows, most private campgrounds close and the state park's facilities are shut down, though day walk-in access continues at the park during posted gate hours.
Late May and June bring leaf-out, wildflowers, and heavy blackfly and mosquito activity, along with rising tick pressure. July and August are the peak booking window, with warm days, comfortable lake temperatures, and the day-use beach at Peaks-Kenny sometimes filling to capacity on sunny weekends. Arriving before 11 a.m. helps avoid waits at the gate.
September brings cooler nights, fewer bugs, and foliage that generally peaks in late September to early October across the Highlands. By mid-October, overnight lows dip below freezing regularly and snow becomes possible, ending the RV season for most sites.
How to book campgrounds near Dover-Foxcroft
Peaks-Kenny State Park is reserved through Maine's state park system at campwithme.com, or by phone at 800-332-1501 in Maine and 207-624-9950 from outside the state. Reservations for the season, which runs roughly May 22 to September 10, open on the first workday in February, and popular sites can book quickly once the call center opens at 9 a.m. that morning. A two-night minimum stay is required, and reservations must be made at least two business days ahead. After the reservation season ends, sites become first-come, first-served through park closing.
Spacious Skies Balsam Woods, Moosehead Trail Campground, and Stetson Shores Campground each take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For summer weekends and foliage weeks, booking well in advance is realistic. Confirm RV length limits and hookup type when reserving.
What to expect on arrival
Peaks-Kenny sits about 4.5 miles from the center of Dover-Foxcroft via Route 153, then a short drive down State Park Road. Interior roads inside the park are gravel but passable for most rigs at a slow speed. The park has flush toilets, hot showers, dishwashing stations, a trailer dump station, and six water-and-electric sites (22, 24, 25, 26, 55, and 56); the remaining sites have no hookups, and campsites do not sit directly on the water.
Spacious Skies Balsam Woods offers full and partial hookup sites with 30- and 50-amp service, a camp store, a heated pool, and direct ATV trail access. Cell service is fair around the state park and inconsistent farther into the backcountry, so download maps ahead. Black flies peak in late May and June, and deer ticks are present through the warm season, so pack repellent and check daily.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Dover-Foxcroft, ME
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Dover-Foxcroft?
RV rental in Dover-Foxcroft is one of the most affordable ways to explore the Maine Highlands. On RVezy, expect roughly $90 to $175 per night for a travel trailer, $150 to $250 for a Class C motorhome, and $125 to $200 for a campervan rental Dover-Foxcroft hosts list locally. Add fuel, campground fees (Peaks-Kenny State Park sites run about $25 to $35 per night), and any optional add-ons like generators or kayaks. Pro tip: midweek bookings in June and September often unlock the cheapest Dover-Foxcroft pricing, since most travelers target July and August around Moosehead Lake. Use the price filter on RVezy to match your budget.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dover-Foxcroft%2C%20MaineDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Dover-Foxcroft?
Good news: a standard driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Dover-Foxcroft. Maine does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes or travel trailers in the size range you'll find on RVezy. Approved RVezy drivers are generally 25 or older, and identity verification happens through the platform during booking, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the United States? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). Most first-time renters are surprised how simple the process is before heading up to Moosehead Lake.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs an RV rental in Dover-Foxcroft protected if something goes wrong?
Yes. Every RV rental in Dover-Foxcroft booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can drive Route 15 toward Greenville with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers most damage to the vehicle, which is reassuring whether you're on gravel near Sebec Lake or pulling into Peaks-Kenny State Park. During checkout you choose the coverage level that fits you best (this isn't set by the host). It isn't traditional auto insurance, but it provides meaningful financial protection. Add the RVezy support team, available before, during, and after your trip, and you have backup at every step.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Dover-Foxcroft RV trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book, so you can lock in your motorhome rental Dover-Foxcroft dates with confidence. Refund eligibility after the grace period depends on how far out you cancel. Because Moosehead Lake region campgrounds book up months ahead, most travelers reserve their rig early and rely on the grace period if they need to tweak plans. You can review the current cancellation terms anytime in the RVezy Help Center before confirming your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I find a pet-friendly RV rental in Dover-Foxcroft for my dog?
Yes, pet-friendly RV rental Dover-Foxcroft options are plentiful on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search and you'll see rigs from hosts who welcome four-legged co-pilots. Dover-Foxcroft is a great dog destination: Peaks-Kenny State Park on Sebec Lake allows leashed pets in the campground and on trails, and the Law Farm trail network in town is a popular local walk. Moosehead Lake area trails and the Borestone Mountain Audubon Sanctuary near Monson also welcome leashed dogs. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any cleaning fees or pet limits, then pack a towel because a Sebec Lake swim is non-negotiable for most dogs.
maine.gov/dacf/parksandlands/find_parks_lands/peaks_kenny.shtmlCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Dover-Foxcroft?
Yes. RV delivery Dover-Foxcroft is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers heading to Peaks-Kenny State Park, Balsam Woods Campground in Abbot, or Lily Bay State Park on Moosehead Lake. Many hosts will tow the trailer or drive the motorhome straight to your reserved site, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through the systems before they leave. Filter by Delivery when you search to see who offers it and review listed delivery fees (often based on mileage from Dover-Foxcroft). It's the easiest way to enjoy your Dover-Foxcroft RV trip without ever touching a hitch.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dover-Foxcroft%2C%20MaineHow far can I drive on an RV road trip from Dover-Foxcroft?
You can roam as far as your itinerary allows. Many RVezy hosts offer generous daily mileage allowances, and some list RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for an RV road trip from Dover-Foxcroft. Popular distances: Greenville and Moosehead Lake (about 35 miles north), Baxter State Park and Mount Katahdin (around 90 miles northeast), Bangor (about 40 miles south), Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park (about 110 miles southeast), and Quebec City (roughly 270 miles via Jackman). Check the listing's mileage policy before booking, and if you're planning a big loop, message the host about a custom mileage package. Often it's cheaper than paying overage fees.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dover-Foxcroft%2C%20MaineWhere are the best campgrounds near Dover-Foxcroft for an RV?
You're spoiled for choice. Peaks-Kenny State Park on Sebec Lake is the local gem, with wooded sites and a sandy beach, typically open mid-May through late September. Balsam Woods Campground in Abbot (about 10 miles west) has full-hookup sites, a heated pool, and trail access. Lily Bay State Park on Moosehead Lake offers two campgrounds (Rowell Cove and Dunn Point). For a resort feel, Moose Creek RV Resort in Greenville has 30/50-amp full hookups and pull-thrus. RV camping Dover-Foxcroft fills fast in July: reserve Maine State Parks through the official ReserveMaine system as soon as the booking window opens.
campwithme.com/What is the best time of year for an RV trip in Dover-Foxcroft?
Late June through mid-October is prime time for RV camping Dover-Foxcroft. July and August bring warm days (highs typically in the high 70s to low 80s F), perfect for swimming at Sebec Lake, while September and early October deliver Maine's legendary foliage with crisp afternoons and cool sleeping weather. May can still be muddy with blackflies, and Peaks-Kenny generally opens mid-May. Winter (December to March) drops well below freezing with regular snow, so most campgrounds close, though some RVezy hosts rent four-season rigs for snowmobiling on the Interconnected Trail System (ITS). Insider tip: book the third week of September for fewer bugs, fewer crowds, and peak color.
weather.gov/car/I have never rented an RV before. Will I be okay in Dover-Foxcroft?
You're going to do great. First time renting an RV is exactly what the RVezy model is built for: your host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering tanks, propane, slide-outs, the generator, and leveling, and you can text them throughout your trip. Dover-Foxcroft's roads are forgiving for beginners (Route 7 and Route 15 are wide and well-maintained), and most campgrounds in the area, including Peaks-Kenny, have pull-through or easy back-in sites. Pro tip: choose delivery for your first trip so the host handles parking and setup at Sebec Lake while you focus on roasting marshmallows. By day two, you'll feel like a pro.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360003363833-Renter-Help-CenterWhat happens if my RV breaks down on a Maine backroad?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 6 or a dead battery at Lily Bay State Park is just a phone call away from help. Cell service can be patchy north of Dover-Foxcroft toward Greenville and the 100-Mile Wilderness, so download offline maps before you leave and note the landline at your campground office. Your host is also a text away for quick troubleshooting (often the fix is as simple as flipping a propane valve). RVezy's support team is available before, during, and after your trip if anything escalates.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Dover-Foxcroft RV rental into Canada?
Cross-border trips to Quebec or New Brunswick are possible from Dover-Foxcroft, but you'll need the host's written approval and confirmation that coverage extends into Canada. Message the host directly from the listing before booking. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Popular Canadian routes from Dover-Foxcroft include Quebec City via Jackman and Highway 173 (about 270 miles) and the Bay of Fundy via Calais and Route 1 (around 200 miles to St. Stephen). Make sure every traveler has a valid passport, declare any food and firewood at the border (raw firewood is restricted), and you're set for a memorable international leg of your trip.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat should I budget for fuel on a Dover-Foxcroft RV trip?
Budget realistically and you'll never sweat the pump. Campervans on RVezy average 16 to 20 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A rigs 6 to 10 MPG. Maine gas prices typically run a few cents above the national average, and stations get sparser north of Dover-Foxcroft (fill up in town before heading to Greenville or Baxter State Park, where prices climb). For a 300-mile loop to Moosehead Lake and Mount Kineo in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: the Irving Big Stop in Lincoln and Dysart's in Bangor have RV-friendly pumps and high canopies.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Dover-Foxcroft?
Book early and your trip falls into place. Maine State Parks, including Peaks-Kenny and Lily Bay, take reservations through ReserveMaine on a rolling four-month window, and prime July and August weekends often sell out within hours of release. Private parks like Balsam Woods and Moose Creek RV Resort recommend reserving two to three months ahead for summer, while September foliage weekends fill 30 to 60 days out. For shoulder-season trips in late May or early October, you can often grab a site a week ahead. Insider tip: set a calendar reminder for 7 a.m. Eastern on the day your dates open on ReserveMaine.
campwithme.com/What are local driving conditions like around Dover-Foxcroft?
Driving an RV around Dover-Foxcroft is relaxing compared to most of the country. Route 7, Route 15, and Route 6/16 are paved two-lane highways with light traffic and wide shoulders, well-suited for first-timers easing into a motorhome. Watch for moose (especially at dawn and dusk between Dover-Foxcroft, Monson, and Greenville), logging trucks on Route 11, and frost heaves in spring. Avoid unpaved logging roads in the North Maine Woods unless your host approves. In winter, snow tires are smart on Route 15 toward Moosehead Lake. Pro tip: keep your gas tank above half full once you pass Greenville, services thin out fast.
maine.gov/mdot/travel/winterdriving/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Dover-Foxcroft?
Plenty, and the variety is great. Peaks-Kenny State Park offers wooded sites, modern bathhouses, potable water, and a dump station on-site. Balsam Woods Campground has full hookups (water, electric, sewer), a heated pool, camp store, and laundry. Moose Creek RV Resort in Greenville features 30/50-amp service, full sewer, Wi-Fi, and bathhouses. Lily Bay State Park has a boat launch and basic restroom facilities. For fresh water and dumping between stops, the Greenville area has seasonal public RV services. Pro tip: top off your fresh tank in Dover-Foxcroft before heading deep into the Moosehead region, since some primitive sites have no water at all.
campwithme.com/What is included inside an RV rental in Dover-Foxcroft?
More than you'd expect. Most RVs listed in Dover-Foxcroft on RVezy come fully outfitted: real beds with linens (often included or offered as an add-on), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, cookware, and dishes, a bathroom with toilet and shower, dinette seating with seatbelts, heating, air conditioning, and a propane tank. Many Class C motorhomes and travel trailers also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and an onboard generator for off-grid nights at primitive sites near Moosehead Lake. Wi-Fi is hit-or-miss in northern Maine regardless of equipment, so plan to unplug. Each listing on RVezy shows exactly what's included, so you'll know before you book.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dover-Foxcroft%2C%20MaineWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for my RV rental?
RVezy hosts in the Dover-Foxcroft area offer thoughtful add-ons that make your trip easier: linens and towel packages, camp chairs, propane fire pits, bike racks, kayaks and paddleboards (a huge plus for Sebec Lake), generators, and pre-stocked kitchen kits. Many hosts also offer delivery and setup for a flat fee or per-mile rate to Peaks-Kenny, Lily Bay, or Balsam Woods. Mileage policies vary by listing: some include 100 to 150 free miles per day, others advertise unlimited mileage, perfect for a wide-ranging Maine Highlands loop. Use Instant Book to lock in your dates immediately, or message the host first to bundle add-ons. Pickup is typically at the host's home address in or near Dover-Foxcroft.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Dover-Foxcroft%2C%20MaineHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card when you book (never directly to the host in cash), which keeps your protection plan and support coverage active. A refundable security deposit is held on your card before pickup and released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. The deposit amount is shown on each listing, so there are no surprises. Pro tip: do a quick walkaround video with your host at pickup and drop-off, it makes any conversation about wear-and-tear straightforward and protects everyone, especially after a dusty drive on Sebec Lake gravel roads.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Dover-Foxcroft for winter snowmobiling trips?
Yes, winter RV trips are growing, and Dover-Foxcroft sits right on the Interconnected Trail System (ITS), one of the best snowmobiling networks in the Northeast. Some RVezy hosts list four-season rigs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and extra insulation built for sub-zero nights. You'll want a campground or private property with shore power (30/50-amp) since boondocking in January with temperatures well below zero is tough on any RV. Filter for hosts who mention winter use and confirm cold-weather prep in your booking message. Pro tip: pair your rental with a stay at a private ITS-adjacent property and you can ride right from the door toward Greenville and Moosehead Lake.
