Campgrounds and RV parks near Newberry, MI

The Upper and Lower Tahquamenon Falls are the marquee attraction. The Upper Falls spans roughly 200 feet wide and drops nearly 50 feet, ranking as one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi, with an accessible boardwalk to the brink. The Lower Falls can be viewed from the riverbank, a pedestrian bridge to Lower Falls Island completed in 2021, or a rental rowboat. Tahquamenon Falls State Park has more than 35 miles of trails, including a segment of the North Country National Scenic Trail. Day trips from a Newberry base reach Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, the Grand Marais dunes, Kitch-iti-kipi spring, Oswald's Bear Ranch, the Tahquamenon Logging Museum, and the Soo Locks. Muskallonge Lake State Park is a well-known spot for agate rockhounding along Lake Superior, beachcombing, and paddling on the calmer inland lake.

Peak RV season runs from mid-June through Labor Day, when highs are comfortable, biting insects have thinned from their May and June peak, and all park facilities are open. Summer weekends at Tahquamenon Falls and Muskallonge Lake state parks fill within minutes of release, and both parks share Michigan's DNR reservation system. Early fall is a strong shoulder season. Color typically peaks from late September into early October across the U.P., and October is also the wettest month in Newberry, with roughly 70 mm of precipitation. Nights turn cold quickly, and state-park amenities begin winding down through October. Winter closes most of the area. Muskallonge Lake State Park closes its campground for the winter, though the surrounding area remains open for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice fishing. Tahquamenon Falls is the only U.P. state park that keeps a campground open year-round, currently maintaining about 20 semi-modern sites without shower buildings or flush toilets during the cold months. Some private operators in the Newberry cluster stay open year-round for cabin lodging.

Cell service is spotty across Luce County and drops out entirely on stretches of M-123 and H-58 between Newberry and Lake Superior. Download offline maps before leaving town, and treat the Newberry chamber and state-park headquarters as backup information sources. Expect wooded, shaded sites with pine duff and sandy soil. State-park sites at Muskallonge Lake offer electric hookups but no water or sewer at the site; a sanitation station is available on the way out. Private campgrounds around Newberry generally offer full hookups on at least some pull-throughs. Black bears, deer, and porcupines are common in the surrounding forest, and Michigan restricts moving firewood to prevent invasive pests, so buy it locally. Quiet hours at Michigan state parks run 10 p.m. to 8 a.m.
