Campgrounds and RV parks near Port Gibson, MS

History drives most trips here. Grand Gulf Military Monument Park preserves the site where Confederate batteries fired on Ulysses S. Grant's forces during the Battle of Grand Gulf, and Grant later used Grand Gulf as a base of operations after the Battle of Port Gibson. The landmark includes Fort Cobun and Fort Wade earthworks, the Grand Gulf Cemetery, a museum, picnic facilities, hiking trails, an observation tower, and several restored buildings. Along the Parkway, Rocky Springs Campground has picnic tables, restrooms, a section of the Old Natchez Trace, and self-guiding walking trails through the old town site and the spring. Vicksburg National Military Park sits about 30 minutes north for driving tours of the siege lines. On the Louisiana side, Lake Bruin State Park offers freshwater fishing, boating, and water sports on a large oxbow lake, with fishing piers and a boat launch.

The area is a shoulder-season destination. Rocky Springs Campground fills up on weekends during spring and fall, so campers arriving on a Friday or Saturday should plan to arrive as early as possible. The Parkway campgrounds are typically busiest during spring and fall, especially over holiday weekends. Summer brings heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms. From late May to September, temperatures and humidity climb across the Mississippi River valley, with August typically the warmest month averaging highs near 90°F, and days that are hot, humid, and often sunny. Peak Atlantic hurricane season runs from August through October and can bring heavy rain bands this far inland. Winters are mild but wet, with January often the wettest month. Grand Gulf Military Monument Park and Lake Bruin State Park operate year-round. Camping at Grand Gulf is available at the park's campground year-round on 42 full hook-up concrete sites. Rocky Springs Campground stays open year-round, but potable water can be intermittent, so RVs should arrive with full tanks.

Roads into these campgrounds are rural, and cell service can be spotty near the Parkway. At Rocky Springs Campground, pull-through and back-in sites are available, but there are no hookups, showers, or hot water. Renters should arrive self-contained with full fresh-water tanks and empty grey and black tanks. Grand Gulf Military Monument Park operates two distinct camping loops along a county road west of Port Gibson, with full hookups available and space for larger RVs up to about 55 feet. The upper camping area allows campfires, while the lower valley campground prohibits fires because smoke tends to collect between the hills. At Lake Bruin State Park, waterfront sites book earliest, and some sites require backing in, so drivers should factor that into site selection.
