Holmes County State Park adds hiking trails, a playground, and cabin rentals alongside its developed campground. Central Mississippi has a humid subtropical climate with mild winters and hot, humid summers. Rainfall is spread across the calendar, and severe thunderstorms and tornadoes are most common in spring. Prevailing southerly winds pull in moisture that drives high humidity and afternoon storm activity from May through September. Spring and fall are the most comfortable RV seasons and also the busiest at the Natchez Trace Parkway campgrounds, which see peak use during spring and fall, especially on holiday weekends. At Grenada Lake, crappie fishing peaks in spring, which pushes weekend demand at Hugh White State Park - Outlet Channel and can fill the reservable loops well ahead of arrival. Summer brings daily highs near 91 degrees Fahrenheit and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, so shaded sites and electrical hookups for air conditioning are valuable. Winters are short and generally mild, with occasional freezes and rare light snow; state-park camping stays open year-round, but tent campers should plan for damp, cool nights.

Hookup standards vary by park. At Hugh White State Park - Outlet Channel, each site has water and electricity, a picnic table, and a grill, with bathhouses offering hot showers and a central sewage dump station. Holmes County State Park offers 28 RV sites with 30-amp water and electric hookups, a central dump station, and a bathhouse with hot showers and coin-operated laundry in the developed camping area. Jeff Busby is primitive. Both RVs and tents are welcome, but there are no water or electric hookups and no showers. Flush toilets and drinking water are available, and generators can typically run until quiet hours. Rig-length limits are generous at the state parks, and shaded sites are the norm across the region.
